IPL 2023 Auction LIVE: Delhi Capitals will be without their coach Ricky Ponting for IPL Auction. Ponting will be available over call but he won’t be attending the auction in person, InsideSport understands. The reason is that it is the holiday season. Furthermore, Australia will face SouthAfrica in the boxing day Test at MCG. As Ponting is a commentator for Channel 7, he will be in Melbourne. Like Ponting, many other IPL franchises will be without their foreign staff on December 23 in Kochi for auction. Follow IPL 2023 LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Franchise owners had requested BCCI to advance the Auction Day due to the unavailability of their foreign coaching staff. Many of the foreign staff are in-charge of decision-making. Sunrisers Hyderabad will be the worst hit. SRH are likely to be without their new head coach Brian Lara. Dale Steyn is also unlikely to join.

“Our foreign coaching staff won’t be attending the auction. They will be joining over phone call. I guess it will be the same for many teams. But I don’t think it is a big issue. Yes, it would have been better if the coaches could have joined us at the auction table. But we have to accept if the BCCI has finalised the date,”one of the franchise officials told InsideSport.

Video conferencing at IPL Auction? – Meanwhile, the BCCI may allow franchises video conferencing during the auction. The reason is the Christmas holiday and the absence of foreign staff. Most franchises will be without their foreign coaching staff who will be on holiday. A final call will be at the franchises’ meeting on December 21.

“We know, it’s going to be a little difficult for all. That is why December 16 was first proposed. But we have agreed to December 23 due to some unforeseen circumstances. It will be a little tough on the foreign staff. But even we have international games before or after Diwali. So, everyone will have to manage,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

As Covid-19 pandemic has helped revamp digital infrastructure at every point, video-conferencing isn’t a big deal anymore. While phone call during the auction is allowed, whether there will be a dedicated video-conferencing facility, it is yet to be decided.

“As for video conferencing, we will take a call on that in the franchise meeting before the auction. If all the stakeholders agree, I don’t see any reason not to allow it,” the official said.
