IPL 2023 Auction LIVE: In dire need of WICKET-KEEPER, SRH set sights on Heinrich Klaasen & Joshua Philippe, Narayan Jagadeesan HOT Domestic property, Check OUT
Sunrisers Hyderabad splashed Rs 10.75 crore on Nicholas Pooran last year, but the 2016 champions did not yield the desired results. Having released the dashing left-hander, SRH are back to square on in their search for a keeper batter. The 2016 champions do have Glenn Phillips in their ranks, but the Kiwi batter is a reluctant keeper. Furthermore, he also chips in with part-time spin and is a gun fielder in the outfield.
SRH have no qualms with matching a price tag, but there are no options aplenty in the keeping department. Pooran himself is one but is unlikely Sunrisers take the bait again after a mild 2022 season. South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen offers an alternative.
A swashbuckling middle-order bat, Klaasen boasts of a high strike rate in T20I cricket. Having journeyed around the IPL as backup, the 31-year-old will be itching for a more starring role. He strikes at 146.79 for Proteas and likes taking on the spinners in the middle phase of the innings. Klaasen top scored in two of the four T20Is he featured in India this year, while also was the second-best run-getter in the ODI series.
IPL 2023 Auction LIVE: Sunrisers in dire need of wicketkeeper
- Sunrisers are in search of a wicketkeeper having released Nicholas Pooran
- Heinrich Klaasen and Joshua Philipe are best placed bets in the IPL Auction.
- Both have limited IPL experience, but Klaasen’s T20I record makes him the favourite.
- Narayan Jagadeesan is a hot property and SRH will face stiff competition from GT and KKR.
- The 2016 champions do have Glenn Phillips in the squad as a reserve option.
- However, the Kiwi star is more of an influence on the outfield and can chip in with overs as well.
Another overseas option for Sunrisers would be Joshua Philippe. With Kane Williamson released as well, Phillipe could slot in at the top of the order with Abhishek Sharma. A hard-hitting opener, the 24-year-old has a fine record in the BBL but has not had a consistent run in the IPL. A cost-effective option, he could further help SRH strengthen their side and focus their purse on other primary targets.
Among domestic options, Narayan Jagadeesan has made heads turn in the past few weeks. The Tamil Nadu star scored five consecutive hundreds in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, including a world-record 277. He began his Ranji Trophy campaign with a century and a 22-ball 59 with eight sixes.
