IPL 2023 Auction LIVE: Punjab Kings bags Sam Curran for Rs 18.50 Crore, breaks Chris Morris’ record of Rs 16.25 Crore: Follow IPL Auction LIVE
For the record, the highest IPL auction bid is with former South African all-rounder Chris Morris who was bagged by Rajasthan Royals for whopping Rs 16.25 Crore during the 2021 season. The record looks under threat, especially from the all-rounders category.
England all-rounder Sam Curran whose base price is Rs 2 Crore is expected to fetch a huge amount at the IPL 2023 Auction. Something similar is the situation with Australian Cameroon Green and England Test skipper Ben Stokes.
If one talks strictly about Indian players, then Mayank Agarwal at a base price of Rs 1 Crore is expected to trigger a bidding war amongst franchises. The reason being he is a solid opener and also provides captaincy options. A few other options include West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran and Chennai batter N Jagadeesan.

InsideSport reached out to multiple franchises in the past two days and they revealed that though they want star players to be in their camp, but they won’t go overboard for any one of them. With SRH and PBKS left with a heavy purse going into the Auction, the likes of Stokes, Curran and Green would be on their radar.
Ben Stokes, Sam Curran on ‘MOST WANTED LIST’ of IPL TEAMS
- SRH, PBKS, LSG, MI, CSK have either of these two players on their SHOPPING LIST
- RR, KKR, GT also want to buy them but doesn’t have monies in bank to go for them
- RCB, DC representatives did not respond to InsideSport messages.
“Few teams will surely break bank for Curran & Stokes but not many can afford to do that. You want them – but you don’t have resources to do that will be the issue with most of the teams. SRH & PBKS will have advantage over others when buying for these two”, said one of the franchise representative heading for Kochi.
With so much of interest in Stokes & Curran, the big question InsideSport asked some of the franchises was whether $2MN salary mark can be breached?
The answer was ‘NO’ by each and every franchise.
“No chance that anyone would shell out $2MN for any player. No Mathematics would work. SRH & PBKS have purse to do that but why would they fight with each other. They can settle with 1 player each. Unlikely that bids would reach anywhere near 2MN dollars”, said one of the franchise official who doesn’t have big money in the purse.
They say records are meant to be broken. In case, if the franchises go all out for one of the top players in the IPL auction later in the day, one can’t totally blame them. It is all about getting the best players to play for them at the best cost.
IPL Teams Player Purse: Sunrisers had the largest purse (INR 42.25 crore) for the auction, followed by Kings (INR 32.20 crore), Lucknow Super Giant (INR 23.35 crore), Mumbai Indians (INR 20.55 crore), Chennai Super Kings (INR 20.45 crore), Delhi Capitals (INR 19.45 crore), Gujarat Titans (INR 19.25 crore), Royals (INR 13.2 crore), Royal Challengers Bangalore (INR 8.75 crore) and Kolkata Knight Riders (INR 7.05 crore).
