IPL 2023 Auction: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will implement the new “Impact Player” rule in IPL 2023. According to the rule, teams are allowed to make one substitution from their starting XI during a game if they believe it will help. Hence in light of BCCI’s decision to implement the substitution rule in the IPL, we take a look at four players who would make strong choices for franchises to consider as possible impact players in the IPL 2023 auction. The Indian apex cricketing body had earlier introduced the ‘Impact Player’ rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 (India’s domestic T20 tournament). Hrithik Shokeen, a 22-year all-rounder for Delhi, became the first impact player in tournament history.

In addition to the standard playing XI, teams are allowed to name four substitutes (impact players) in their roster for a certain match. Each team may employ one of these four players during a game. The substitute will take the place of a player from the starting XI.

The essential aspect of this rule is that the replacement has to be made before the conclusion of the 14th over of either innings. The impact player is permitted to bowl and bat for the entirety of his allotted overs.

Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan has been a part of several IPL franchises in the past. The speedster was picked up by CSK for IPL 2022 majorly to bowl at the death overs.

However, Jordan failed to live up to the expectations of the Yellow Army and was released from squad. Speaking about his performance in IPL 2022, the right-arm seamer played four games and managed to scalp just two wickets. He also bowled at a poor economy of 10.52.

Despite the poor stats in the last IPL, Jordan’s exploits in death overs can’t be overlooked. Even when he represents his country, he frequently falls short of his required number of overs and typically only bowls two or three at the end. This makes him such a perfect Impact Player for any team.

The 34-year-old made an impression with performances of 3/34 and 2/27 in the semifinal and final game of this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Odean Smith

Odean Smith was bought for Rs 6 crore by Punjab Kings but failed to live up to his reputation in IPL 2022. In the six games Smith played, he could only manage 51 runs at a strike rate of 115.91.

With the ball, he leaked runs at an alarming rate of 11.87. The West Indian recently went unsold in the SA20 Auction as well, and was subsequently released.

Insidesport

The issue with Smith is that his hitting doesn’t have a second level. He has been incredibly uneven in his career thus far because he can only either go big or will just flop.

Franchises might not want to take a chance by putting him in the starting XI. However, he is the ideal impact player because he can be trusted to go in and swing at anything with his bat.

Cameron Green

Australian players make up the largest contingent of overseas players in IPL, and being a pace-bowling all-rounder, Cameron Green could spark bidding wars during the auction on December 23. Green had performed admirably well during the India vs Australia bilateral series when the Aussies came to tour the subcontinent before the T20 World Cup.

Insidesport

Speaking about Green’s numbers in T20I format, the 23-year-old has played eight games and has scored 139 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 173.75. In his three games against India, Green has already stroked two fifties. With the ball, he has scalped five wickets so far. However, his economy is on the higher side at 8.9.

It might not always be simple to fit in Green, though, given that a starting XI can only have four foreign players in IPL. The impact player rule can help the team that selects him in this situation.

Daniel Sams

Australian pacer Daniel Sams was roped in by Mumbai Indians for INR 2.6 crores in the 2022 Auction. He played 11 matches in IPL 2022 picking up 13 wickets at an average of 28.46 and an economy rate of 8.81.

Insidesport

With the bat, he managed 38 runs in 10 innings. These numbers were clearly not good enough to justify Sams’s talent and hence force Mumbai to release him.

However, going into the auction, the Australian pacer has the ability to swing the new ball. He can also be quite handy in the death overs. The 30-year-old can hit big strokes with the bat. A complete package in itself, Sams can be a perfect utility cricketer in IPL 2022.
