Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings & the two newly added franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad are yet to finalize their captains. Barring Lucknow who is looking to sign KL Rahul before IPL Auctions, the 4 others will not only have to pick players from the auction – but will also look for a suitable leader for IPL 2022 and beyond.

While the yet-to-be-named Lucknow franchise is more or less done with ‘captain selection’, the remaining four franchises are yet to decide on a name to lead their squad.

Apart from building picking up the right leader, the franchises also face an uphill task to start from scratch and build a whole new squad.

Lucknow / Ahmedabad / RCB / KKR / PBKS don’t have any captain to lead their sides in the upcoming IPL edition

‘Vacancy Open’ in 5 IPL Teams for Captains:

Lucknow IPL Team: The newly formed Lucknow franchise is almost certain to sign KL Rahul as their leader. Rahul has not been officially announced or signed as captain of the team but the sources close to the management tells that the ‘deal is almost finalized’

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB): Virat Kohli stepped down from the RCB leadership after the last edition. AB DeVilliers also has retired. This clearly means RCB requires a new leader. Who that will be, is yet to be ascertained.

Punjab Kings (PBKS): The team from Punjab failed to retain KL Rahul as captain for their side but managed retaining his partner Mayank Agarwal. It is likely that Mayank can be handed over PBKS captaincy – but official word in this regard is still missing

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): KKR didn’t retain Eoin Morgan after a ‘not-so good’  IPL 2021 with the bat. KKR has retained Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy & Venkatesy Iyer – but it is unlikely any of these will be handed captaincy of the team. This means KKR will also go for a new leader and auction will be the way forward for them.

Ahmedabad IPL Franchise: Most precariously placed is the newly auctioned Ahmedabad franchise. CVC Partners who were the highest bidder for the team but the BCCI is yet to give them official GREEN SIGNAL on the ownership. As the ownership is not sorted, having captain on board is out of question for the new IPL team.

In comparison defending champions Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals & Sunrisers Hyderabad have their captaincy box ticked

IPL Franchises that already have a captain:

The two of the most successful IPL franchises Mumbai Indians & Chennai Supers Kings along with Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals & Sunrisers Hyderabad would be a little relaxed as compared to the above five mentioned franchises when it comes to ‘captain selection’.

While MI & CSK will be led by their regular skippers Rohit Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni respectively, Delhi Capitals went ahead with Rishabh Pant to lead their side, releasing Shreyas Iyer.

Rajasthan Royals too retained Sanju Samson as their skipper while Sunrisers Hyderabad will be led by Kane Williamson who took over the reins from David Warner in the last edition.

The mega auctions are set to take place on February 12, 13 in Bengaluru with BCCI likely to release the list of players for mega auctions in the next week.
