5. Odean Smith announces himself on the big stage
Punjab Kings were considered one of the favourites for the title, but there were concerns regarding the performance of Odean Smith since he had never played in the IPL before. However, he showed his class in only his first match of the competition. Chasing a target of 206 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings were 156/5 after 15 overs when Odean Smith came to bat. The match seemed to have slipped out of PBKS’ grasp, but Smith caught everyone by surprise as he smacked 25 runs in only 8 deliveries, which included 1 four and 3 sixes.
4. A new ‘Baby AB’ emerges
Prior to the start of IPL 2022, all eyes were on South African youngster Dewald Brevis, who is affectionately called ‘Baby AB’. We got a ‘Baby AB’ on the third day of the tournament – not in the form of Brevis, but Lucknow Super Giants’ very own Ayush Badoni. The youngster was a completely unknown commodity prior to the start of the tournament but in his very first game against Gujarat Titans, Badoni played a stunning knock of 54 runs from 41 deliveries. Since then, he has been playing one match-winning knock after another.
3. Jos ‘THE BOSS’ scores first century of IPL 2022
IPL fans did not have to wait long for the first century of the season, as Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler scored a sensational ton in only his second and the competition’s ninth match. Against Mumbai Indians, Buttler struck 100 runs in 68 deliveries, which included as many as 11 fours and 5 sixes.
2. Pat Cummins registers joint-fastest fifty in IPL history
Australian speedster Pat Cummins set the stage on fire when Kolkata Knight Riders took on Mumbai Indians – surprisingly now with his accurate bowling, but with his excellent batting. He played an outstanding knock of 56 runs from 15 deliveries, which included 4 fours and 6 sixes. He is now sharing the record of scoring the fastest IPL fifty alongside KL Rahul.
1. Rahul Tewatia hits two back-to-back sixes in last two balls
The best moment of IPL 2022 so far came in the game between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans. Chasing a target of 190 set by PBKS, GT found themselves struggling at 178/4 in 19.4 overs – needing 12 runs from 2 balls or simply two back-to-back sixes. Such incidents are extremely rare, but Rahul Tewatia did the unthinkable by smacking two big sixes in two consecutive deliveries off Odean Smith’s bowling to help GT register a 4-wicket triumph.
