RR Retained Players: Rajasthan Royals retain Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Yashaswi Jaiswal for next three seasons

What were your feelings when Rajasthan Royals decided to keep us as the first pick by RR at IPL 2022 Retention?

It was a very natural decision actually. So definitely I think it was something expected. It’s a great moment for me. The trust shown by the franchise and the coaches and the supporting staff trusting in me to do this role. I think definitely, I am a very young captain and I am very much excited to experience a lot of things and learn and become better as a cricketer and as well as a leader of an IPL team.

I think from the moment I was made the leader, the thing was very clear from the franchise that they are looking at a longer period of me leading the team. So, I think the words were exchanged much before the retention and whatever process we went through. So, It was much decided before, that’s what I would like to say.

Why RR prefer Jos Buttler as the second retention for IPL 2022?

Having Jos Buttler with me in the last couple of seasons. I have really enjoyed batting with him. For last 2-3 years, we’ve had a lot of different and interesting partnerships and he had single-handedly won us lots of different matches. To be honest, he is very great, he has a great personality. He is a really great person on and off the field. And he is definitely the main member of our core group. I really look forward to learn a lot of things from Jos. Having Jos again for us in the coming season. It’s really exciting time to look forward to.

Yashahvi Jaiswal’s inclusion in retention was surprising, Isn’t it?

Talking about Jaiswal as you all know everyone in the RR franchise or everyone in Indian cricket is very excited to experience a person like Yashasvi Jaiswal. The way he bats, I think he definitely has a great future ahead. When I look at Jaiswal, I remember my old days. As you said, when I was retained at the age of 18, the same thing has happened with Jaiswal as well. Being retained as a youngster and being able to play for Rajasthan Royals, I see some of my old days when I see him getting retained so young. Absolutely, I think this big auction gives us that chance where we can rebuild our team and then look back at the season and understand what all things went wrong and then implement in the coming seasons. I am very much excited for the upcoming auctions.

Was it tough to choose the final retentions with so many young players leaving their mark in last few seasons?

Yeah, we definitely had a lot of conversations with Kumar Sangakkara, Manjo Sir, Zubin Bharucha and Romi Bhinder and a lot of RR management and players and senior players. So, I think we keep on having the touch no matter what. It’s not about the two months. We definitely keep communicating throughout the year no matter what. There have been a lot of different meetings happening on a lot of different topics and yes, we are all excited and looking forward. Yes, It’s a really tough call to say not to people who have given a lot of heart and dedication and time to our franchise from last 3-4 years. I think it has been very challenging time for us. When you have some real international quality players and some really good Indian young talents with you, it was a tough decision to retain and release players.
