IPL 2022 Retention: MS Dhoni’s Big sacrifice – Despite many indicating otherwise, it was certain that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will retain captain MS Dhoni. But the CSK by heart, he took a massive pay cut. From a Rs 15 Crore salary, Dhoni took a pay cut of Rs 3 Crore. The reason, team should not lose BIG PLAYER like Ravindra Jadeja – the same way SRH lose Rashid Khan or PBKS lost KL Rahul: Follow InsideSport.IN for all updates on IPL 2022.

When the Chennai Super Kings announced the retention list, the only big surprise was Dhoni’s retention amount. With the BCCI setting salary caps for four players, skipper MS Dhoni decided to put his team ahead. He handed over the highest retention cap of Rs 16 Crore to Ravindra Jadeja and took a pay cut to be slotted in the second slab for Rs 12 crore.

“Mahi Bhai himself gave Jadeja No. 1 retained player tag, it is his gesture – no one knows better than him what the team requires. He will always be our captain’, said team’s bowling coach L Balaji

From CSK’s perspective, it was a logical step. Ravindra Jadeja is considered the future captain and IPL 2022 is likely to be his last. Dhoni wanted to retire in front of vociferous CSK fans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and he will have that as the IPL 2022 will be played in India this time.

“I have always planned my cricket, my last international game on home turf was in Ranchi, hopefully, my last T20 will be in Chennai. Whether it is next year or in five years, we do not know,” MS Dhoni said at CSK’s IPL 2021 title celebration.

“I think it is a great stage where I can thank all the ex-cricketers, my fellow cricketers and also the BCCI administrators for their contribution to cricket. Thanks a lot for your effort, cricket has changed over the years but because of the effort we are here and cricket will keep moving forward,” Dhoni added.

For MS Dhoni, his heart and soul beats for Chennai. The two years that he was not with CSK as the franchise was banned, he regretted every bit of it.

The first thing CSK did was to retain the captain ahead of the 2018 auction and MS Dhoni led the team to their third title on a grand comeback.

  • IPL 2012 (CSK): ₹8.3 Crore

In IPL 2020 – CSK struggled and finished almost at the bottom, was called ‘DAD’s ARMY’ but very next year Dhoni & CSK again proved their detractors wrong. Dhoni fulfilled his promise, guiding the team to their 4th title in IPL 2021.

However, at 40, MS Dhoni is not the same batsman. In the last two seasons. he has been reluctant to come to bat and has pushed others ahead of him. He is not a finisher anymore and that has hurt the team on many occasions. But Dhoni is CSK’s heart and with him around, the team can build a strong future.

It seems Jadeja is Dhoni’s choosen one – under whom CSK will attempt to build its future.

Apart from MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, CSK retained all-rounder Moeen Ali and young batting sensation Ruturaj Gaikwad. Moeen Ali will get Rs 8 crore while Gaikwad will pocket Rs 6 crore, a hike of Rs 2 crore.
