The last time, there was a hike in prize money was back in 2016. However, despite the board getting richer by Rs 12,175 crore with the sale of the Ahmedabad and Lucknow franchise, the prize money has remained constant for the year.
IPL 2022 Prize Money:
- Winner: 20 Cr
- Runners-up: 12.5 Cr
- Third-place: 7 Cr
- 4th place: 6.5 Cr
In fact, since 2016, the prize money was reduced to 15 Crore in 2017. While it was revised to 20 Crore in IPL 2018 and 2019, BCCI cut it in half to Rs 10 crore in IPL 2020 due to the Covid pandemic hitting the global market and ad sales besides a dip in sponsorships.

However, this time, the BCCI has received record sponsorship deals of over Rs 1,000 Crore. Add the sale of two franchises, BCCI has enough money to increase the prize purse.
“Yes, we are aware that the prize money hasn’t increased in the last few years. But you have to also account for the Covid and the related increase in cost. Hopefully, we will be able to revise it from next edition,” the BCCI official said.

The sale of media rights will also boost BCCI’s funds. The IPL Media Rights are set to be auctioned in June and the BCCI expects over Rs 30,000 Crore. However, the Rs 20 Crore prize money is still the highest amongst all franchise T20 leagues. Furthermore, the franchises do not depend on prize money as they get a big chunk of TV rights money from the BCCI.
“Well, if you put it that way, the prize money should increase every two years. With 10 teams, it should definitely increase. But as you are aware, it is only symbolic. Definitely, the players, who are picked for their base price or in lakhs get a good bonus. But from a franchise business point of view, it does not impact,” a CEO of a franchise told InsideSport.
