IPL 2022 New Year: 5 major changes, fans will witness in Season 15 of Indian Premier League in 2022

IPL 2022 Auction: BCCI all set to release list of players for IPL 2022 Mega Auction in the second week of January

10 Teams

The IPL 2022 will be a 10 teams affair with the addition of the Lucknow & Ahmedabad franchise. The RPSG Group have picked Lucknow as their home base with a winning bid of INR 7090 crores. CVC Capital opted for Ahmedabad with a bid of INR 5625 crores.

IPL 2022 returns to India & home crowd

The Indian Premier League will return home from the UAE. The crowd will return to the stadium to watch their favourite players in action and bring life to the stadium. Last year, no crowd were allowed in Phase 1 amid a spike in COVID cases. The BCCI will take a final call on the crowd cap limit weeks ahead of the IPL 2022 season.

No RTM

Unlike the previous IPL editions, no team will enjoy the right to use Right to Match in order to retain their players for an equal amount. This will make the auction a real challenge owing to the wallet restriction for IPL 2022. The development could further intensify the bidding war among quality players.

COVID Tracker & Bio-bubble Integrity manager

With COVID playing havoc in IPL 2021 Phase 1 and further leading to suspension, BCCI wouldn’t take chance. Like Restrata in the previous two UAE editions, COVID trackers will be used to prevent coronavirus cases.  Moreover, bubble integrity managers will be appointed for the smooth conduct of the COVID protocols.

Format

The teams will play 7 home games and 7 away matches but instead of the round-robin system, it will revert to the group system. It is likely to replicate the model used in the 2011 season, which also featured 10 teams, and had teams split into two loose groups. The 70 league matches were then followed by four Playoff games.

“Ideally we do want to have home and away format but playing 94 matches during a season is not feasible. It will take over 70 days and will put a lot of strain on the players. There will be a change in format for sure. We haven’t decided on it yet and we already have a format for 10-team. But we will take a final call after discussing with all the stakeholders at a later stage,” the BCCI official told InsideSport.
