IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene’s in trouble, ‘fans & Sri Lankan media questions his committment for Sri Lanka Cricket’

IND vs SL LIVE – Mahela Jayawardene Role Questioned: Effective January 1, 2022, Jayawardene was appointed Sri Lanka’s CONSULTANT COACH.

In his new role, Jayawardene has a charge of “the overall cricketing element of the national teams and will provide invaluable strategic support for the players and management teams at the High-Performance Center,” according to SLC.

But just sample this –

  • Sri Lanka was beaten thrashed 3-0 by India in T20 Series concluded on Sunday
  • Sri Lanka lost to Australia 1-4 in T20 Series
  • None of these series Jayawardene was present with the team to give his inputs
  • He also pulled out after the qualifying round of the World Cup in UAE due to family reasons

One of the editorial note by well known Sri Lankan cricket writer Rax Clementine for Sunday Island questioned Jayawardene’s commitment towards national squad.

“Tours of India and Australia are the toughest ones. But he’s not in the dressing room when players need him most. He’s supposed to be providing instructions virtually. Surely, Ambanis are not going to allow him to take a break middle of IPL”, wrote Clementine.

Not only this, InsideSport tried talking to some of the former Sri Lanka Cricketers who also were not too amused with the role being played by Jayawardene.

“He is too occupied. MJ has whole lot of things up his sleeve. With national team you required full & undivided committment & the same is missing with Mahela. Even the national coach appointmment is pending”, said one of the former Sri Lanka test cricketer.

Cricket Experts, writers & fans are also concerned with too much of power being vested under one person. According to some, Jayawardene (MI) & Kumar Sangakkara (Rajasthan Royals) will soon be joining their IPL franchsies for IPL 2022. They will not be available for role with Sri Lanka Cricket.
