IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Two new franchises, player retention, revised salary structure, and all you need to know: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to host a mega auction ahead of the IPL 2022. Initially, the mega auction was initially scheduled to be held ahead of IPL 2021 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the mega auction was postponed by a year. But with BCCI laying the groundwork for inducting two new teams from IPL 2022, the mega auction will take place sometime early next year.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Two new franchises to be added

As per the reports, two new IPL teams are likely to be added ahead of the IPL 2022 edition. While there are plenty of interests to get the franchise rights for the cash-rich tournament, Ahmedabad is the frontrunner with others fighting over a single spot which could be Trivandram.

With two new teams, the BCCI is also likely to increase the purse of the franchise from 85 crores to 90 crores, i.e, an additional 5 crores would be added to the budget of each franchise.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Player Retention and revised salary structure

The new auction will also put a cap on player retention as well as revise the salary of the retained players. Each franchise can now retain four players – either three Indian players and one overseas player or two Indian and two overseas players.

If a franchise retains three players, Rs 15 cr, Rs 11 cr, and Rs 7 cr would be the salary structure of those players, Rs 12.5 cr and Rs 8.5 cr if two players are retained; and Rs 12.5 cr if only one player is retained.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Potential buyers for two new teams

Kolkata-based RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group; the Adani group based in Ahmedabad; Hyderabad-based Aurobindo Pharma Ltd and the Torrent Group that is based in Gujarat are the potential buyers who have shown interest in buying the two new IPL franchises.

The mega auction is scheduled to be held in December this year. As per the reports, the paperwork and official addition of two new teams are likely to be done by mid-October 2021. Once the auction is completed, the tender documents for broadcast and media rights will be released in January 2022.
