“The team will begin practice on March 15 in Mumbai. We haven’t yet finalised the ground. It should be done soon,” a Punjab Kings official told InsideSport on Sunday.

While Shikhar Dhawan was earlier touted as the new captain, Punjab Kings decided to turn to Mayank Agarwal.
“We will go with the player who has been with us and understands the setup and the coaching staff,” another Punjab Kings official said.
Mayank Agarwal fits the bill perfectly. The India Test opener knows head coach Anil Kumble for a long time as the spin legend also hails from Karnataka. Furthermore, he has been with Punjab Kings since joining the franchise in 2018. He was the only high-profile player retained by PBKS.

- Mayank Agarwal was the only consistent player after KL Rahul.
- In KL Rahul’s absence, he led Punjab Kings.
- Mayank Agarwal was the only batsman retained by PBKS.
- PBKS wanted a player who understands the setup to lead the side. Having known Anil Kumble for a long time and been in the franchise for four years, he emerged as the best option.
- Shikhar Dhawan was touted as the captain after PBKS picked him from the auction. But PBKS owners had a change in heart and Mayank was elevated for the role.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings will be a late entrant to the practice. After CSK confirmed that they will begin practice on March 7 in Surat, Punjab Kings official confirmed that they have chosen Mumbai as the venue for the pre-IPL camp. Under Anil Kumble, the camp will begin with domestic players while Mayank Agarwal will join the team after India’s 2nd Test which ends on March 16 in Bengaluru.
- Mumbai will host 55 IPL matches while Pune will host 15 games.
- The similarity of the conditions will help PBKS acclimatise faster.
- The domestic players will join from March 15.
- Mayank Agarwal will join the camp on March 17.
- Jonny Bairstow will not attend the camp as he will be with the England team on West Indies tour.
- Kagiso Rabada will also be unavailable for the camp.
- Liam Livingstone, Shikhar Dhawan and other international stars will join the camp on March 15.
- Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis miss the first few matches and will only join the squad by April 12 after serving 5-day quarantine following the Pakistan tour.
