With a number of English players – Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Ben Stokes, and Jofra Archer – in their ranks, it was always going to be a tough decision for Rajasthan to name the retentions.
“We had to take a lot of factors into consideration while making the decision and would have ideally liked to have gone with four players but the uncertainty surrounding Jofra’s long-term injury forced us to retain only three,” Sangakkara explained in the video released on Rajasthan Royals social media handles.

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer missed the second phase of the IPL 2021 in UAE due to injuries. Stokes suffered a finger injury in the first leg of the season in India and later took a break for mental health issues while Archer has been out of action due to the recurrence of an elbow injury.
