IPL 2022 – England players in IPL – On Friday, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Alex Hales became the second England player after Jason Roy to pull out of IPL ahead of 15th edition. Mark Wood is also contemplating pulling out of the IPL 2022 after complaining of Jofra Archer like elbow problem. Last year, several England players pulled out, raising the question of what is bothering England players? Follow IPL 2022 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Unlike Hales & Roy – Wood who was picked by Lucknow Super Giants is likely to pull out because of injury.

  • A team spokesman confirmed that he had felt “acute pain” in his right elbow during an exploratory nets session on the final morning of the first Test in Antigua. He is also likely to pull out of Caribbean tour.
  • Wood, England’s fastest bowler, had not played any part in the match since bowling five compromised overs on the third morning, in which his regular 90mph pace was noticeably lacking.

While there are multiple reasons, franchises are not happy with their attitude and last-minute pullouts.

“It’s very unfortunate and not should be considered against spirit of the game. When someone makes himself available, the franchises make certain plans around them. We can understand if there is an emergency or an injury but that hasn’t been the case. Certainly, there will be reservations against picking up England players in the future,” a franchise official told InsideSport.

What is really bothering England players? – Not that England players’ pullout will any disruption but franchises are already unhappy with players’ behaviour. Although both Roy and Hales have cited bio-bubble fatigue, franchises and former players have begun raising the question – didn’t they know before registering for auction? While bio-bubble fatigue was a real concern at least last time around, the reason could be different.

  • England players faced heavy criticism after 0-4 loss in Ashes with many pointing fingers at IPL.
  • To manage workload due to the gruelling IPL season, many England cricketers skip red-ball cricket. Moeen Ali recently called it a time on Test career for white-ball cricket.
  • The increasing anti-IPL sentiment at home is forcing England players to rethink their IPL future.
  • Lack of monetary gains is also another reason. Players who get picked at a base price do not make enough money considering the exchange rate involved.

Motion against IPL in England – With the Ashes disaster, former captains including Michael Atherton and others made scathing statements on players’ commitment towards players’ national commitment. They singled out IPL as a major reason behind players’ poor performance in Australia. They believe more focus on white-ball cricket is the reason behind England’s poor show in Test cricket.

“The leading multi-format players are paid seven-figure sums, but, incredibly, the ECB washes its hands of them for two months of the year during the Indian Premier League. Players should not miss international duty to play in the IPL, nor be rested and rotated to allow them to play elsewhere. The carry-on during the winter, and at the start of the English summer, should not happen again,” former England captain Michael Atherton wrote in his column.

Focus on domestic cricket – Amid a negative motion against IPL in England, the English players have decided to focus more on domestic cricket, primarily on County cricket to earn big contracts from the ECB.

Monetary gains – While playing IPL over County or for England can make sense for players like Liam Livingstone, it doesn’t make sense for players who are sold at lowly base price. Both Jason Roy and Alex Hales were sold at Rs 1.5 Cr each (around 150,000 pounds). Jason Roy earns Rs 9.2 Cr from ECB central contract alone apart from match fees and County and The Hundred deals.

“That is an argument but that’s how it is. One earns 10 times their central contract while some get paid less. Who thought David Warner would be picked for 6.25 Cr? That’s how auction dynamics work. That should not be the cause of them pulling out because, through IPL performance, they can earn big contracts in future,” another franchise official with England player said.

Injury protection – Ben Stokes missed the summer and India home series after injuring his finger in the first IPL match. To protect themselves from high-intensity cricket at IPL that can cause injuries, player are mulling over IPL future. Mark Wood may end up pulling out if he is not 100% fit.

Too many franchise leagues: Before IPL, both Jason Roy and Alex Hales turned out in a short Pakistan Super League. But as IPL is played just before the English summer, players opt to rest, skipping two-month long IPL.
