Sunil Gavaskar too backed him to play the finisher’s role in the T20 World Cup in Australia in October, it is too early to judge.
“He said he wants to be a part of the Indian Team for the T20 World Cup. So what I am saying is don’t look at his age, just look at what he’s producing. He’s just changing the complexion of the game with his performance. He’s doing it for his team. He’s doing the job that you can expect him to do at number 6 or 7 at the (T20) World Cup (in October-November),” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.

But is it enough for DK to get a recall? – It will depend on if he can continue with his impressive show. At 37, he is not only competing with his age but also the youngsters like Ishan Kishan and Venkatesh Iyer while Hardik Pandya is set to play the designated finisher’s role in the T20 World Cup.
“He has been fantastic so far, no doubt. But he has played just six games and there are 8-10 games left. If he continues to do well, we have the South Africa series just after the IPL. If the team management and other selectors agree, I don’t see a reason why he should not be recalled,” the selector said.

Who is Dinesh Karthik competing with?
- Ishan Kishan
- Venkatesh Iyer
- Hardik Pandya
The team management has been waiting for Hardik Pandya to make a comeback from injury and he is all set to be recalled for the South Africa series. But with Ishan Kishan and Venkatesh Iyer losing steam, Dinesh Karthik has an opportunity to capitailise on.
“As for T20 World Cup, we have time and matches left to decide on the combination. So, it will be too early to say whether DK will make it to the squad. There is a lot of competition and players with bowling abilities will have slight preference as they provide balance to a squad,” the selector said.
