IPL 2022: Covid under control, BCCI mulls multiple venues for IPL 2022 Playoffs, Ahmedabad likely to host final, decision by next week
The BCCI released fixtures only for the league matches with playoffs set to be decided. The primary reason for that was to understand the evolving situation of Covid in the country. But now that the league stage is under progress and Covid cases are nominal in the country, the BCCI is happy to go ahead with the rest of the scheduling.
The other factor that prevented BCCI from announcing the playoffs venue was the crowd cap. While Maharashtra has moved to allow 50% crowd, if the final is to be played at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, BCCI expects at least 75% crowd to eliminate too many empty seats at the gigantic stadium. The board is currently in talks with the Gujarat government and a 75% sitting capacity is on the cards.
“There are various factors involved in scheduling, especially in Covid times. Air travel is the first and biggest challenge as we have seen covid cases transpiring from that. Now, it looks likely that air travel will be possible without any bio-bubble breach. But as of today, nothing has been finalised and will take another week or so to take a decision as the situation is still evolving,” the BCCI official said.
