“IPL 2022 will be held in India and the tournament will be staged without crowds in attendance. Likely venues for IPL 2022 are Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India (CCI), DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai and if needed, we can look at Pune as well,” ANI quoted a source as saying.

IPL BCCI Franchise Meeting: 3 Big Things decided

1) IPL in INDIA or South Africa? The BCCI and IPL team owners discussed and decided to go ahead with India as the venue for IPL 2022. The tournament will be held in Mumbai in three stadiums while Pune will be on standby.

2) The mega auction venue: The auction will take place in Bengaluru as originally planned on February 12 and 13. Mumbai was kept on as a standby venue in case the Covid situation worsens in Bengaluru.

3) Tentative Date & Schedule: While a final decision is yet to be taken, the BCCI informed the franchises that IPL will tentatively start on March 27.

After hosting IPL 2020 & part of IPL 2021 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), BCCI is not keen to take the IPL to the Emirates nation. The board rather is interested in hosting IPL 2022 in South Africa.

Why the BCCI is not interested to go back to UAE to host IPL?

The reason for being interested in South Africa is two-pronged. 1st being that South Africa has proved itself to be a safe venue as they have successfully hosted India tour.

The board has got great feedback from the players & which has made the BCCI interested in exploring South Africa as host of IPL 2022 if it has to be taken out of India.

Second Reason is the hefty fees charged by the Emirates Cricket Board. ECB charged almost 100 Cr to host IPL in 2020 & another 50 Cr to host second half of IPL in 2021. BCCI is not interested in paying these amounts anymore.
