Iyer has proven himself time and again with the bat, and has also experience of leading Delhi Capitals. With three teams in Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings desperate for a skipper, it seems certain that Iyer will fetch a lucrative contract, which according to reports, can be north of INR 20 crores.

Aakash Chopra recently revealed on his YouTube channel that RCB has a budget of INR 20 crores for the player. “High bids will be placed on Shreyas Iyer. It could be 15-16 crores as well, someone told me that RCB has kept 20 crores for Shreyas Iyer,” the former cricketer claimed. While speaking with InsideSport, IPL auctioneer Hugh Edmeades also stated, “I would be surprised if the Rs 20 crore barrier is not broken this year.”

If the reports turn out to be true, Iyer will become the first player in the history of IPL to bag an INR 20 crore contract.

Why Shreyas Iyer could break all records?

  • The former Delhi Capitals captain will be one of the biggest targets of IPL because of his captaincy credentials.
  • At No 4, he is a dependable batsman and has consistently scored in IPL.
  • The likes of PBKS, KKR and RCB who are yet to announce their captains will be targeting the batsman.

Let us look back at how the price tags of the most expensive players have evolved over the years:

In the IPL 2009 auction, franchises wanted to get their hands on global superstars, and back then, two Englishmen in Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff were in huge demand. Pietersen established himself as a power-hitter before the Caribbean icons in Chris Gayle and Andre Russell stole the limelight, while Flintoff provided the perfect T20I package, as he could be handy with both bat and ball.

The former went to Royal Challengers Bangalore and the latter was signed by Chennai Super Kings – with both fetching mega-money contracts worth USD 1.55 million, which now amounts to roughly INR 11.58 crores.

Yuvraj Singh emerged as the most sought after player back in the 2014 and the 2015 auction. Royal Challengers Bangalore signed him for INR 14 crore in 2014, but owing to his inconsistency, Yuvraj was released after only a year with the Bold Army. However, that helped him bag an even better contract as Delhi Capitals, then known as Daredevils, spent INR 16 crore for him in IPL 2016 auction.

Chris Morris shatters all records

Chris Morris

Chris Morris became the most expensive player ever sold in an IPL auction back in 2021, when he was roped in by Rajasthan Royals for INR 16.5 crore. The South African all-rounder was on the radar of many teams for his unique skill-set, as he could play the role of a finisher and was also a great death bowler. However, the 34-year-old could not justify his outlandish price tag with his performance.
