IPL 2022 Auction: 5 most expensive players in IPL history – With the purse of every franchise in the Indian Premier League rising constantly, we are now seeing records being shattered at every auction in terms of the most expensive player. The likes of Shreyas Iyer and David Warner could script history by becoming the most expensive player of this competition in two days’ time, but before they do so, let us have a look at the five most expensive players of this tournament and what they are up to these days. Follow InsideSport.IN for live updates of the IPL 2022 auction.

IPL 2022 Auction: 5 most expensive players in IPL history – Where are they now? Check Out

1. Chris Morris

South Africa’s Chris Morris is what you call a 360° T20 package – he was a good finisher with the bat, did well with the ball in the death overs and was a decent fielder as well. Rajasthan Royals were desperate to get the Protean on board and shelled out INR 16.25 crore for him in the IPL 2022 auction. However, the all-rounder failed to justify his price tag as he scored only 67 runs, and while he did pick up 15 wickets, he was expensive with the ball. On 11th January, 2022, Morris announced his retirement from all forms of the game, including the IPL.

2. Yuvraj Singh

Back in the mid-2010s, a few franchises desperately needed an all-rounder and with the key players being retained by their teams, Yuvraj Singh became the target number one. He was signed for INR 14 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 and despite having a fairly decent season, he was released after only one year. That, however, turned out to be a boon for the Punjab lad, as he bagged an even better contract for INR 16 crore from the Delhi Capitals (erstwhile Delhi Daredevils). The season did not go according to the plans though, as Singh scored only 248 runs and picked up only a single wicket. The 40-year-old retired from the game in 2019, and since then, he has played in the Road Safety World Series, Global T20 Canada and Abu Dhabi T10 League.

3. Pat Cummins

Pat Cummins is the first mention on our list who is still playing cricket. The Australian pacer can bowl both at the start of the innings and at the death overs with the same influence, which makes him a player everyone wants to have in their team. Kolkata Knight Riders broke their bank for him in the IPL 2020 auction and spent INR 15.50 crore. In the last two seasons, Cummins has blown hot and cold in this competition, picking up 21 wickets in as many matches. He has registered for the IPL 2022 auction and bidding for him will start INR 2 crore.

4. Kyle Jamieson

Overseas pace guns are always expensive in an IPL auction and the 2021 auction was again a testament to that fact, where inexperienced players in the likes of Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith bagged mega-money deals. However, the player who got the most lucrative contract is Kyle Jamieson. The New Zealand pacer received a bid of INR 15 crore from the Royal Challengers Bangalore, but did not live up to the expectations as he picked up 9 wickets from as many matches. He will not feature in the IPL 2022 auction since he has decided to stay back at home and hone his skills to come back strongly in the next season.

5. Ben Stokes

Like Morris, Ben Stokes is a multi-faceted player who can contribute in every single aspect of the game. He was bought for INR 14.50 crore by Rajasthan Royals in 2018, and since then, he has scored 604 runs and has picked up 16 wickets for the team based in pink city. He too will not feature in the IPL 2022 auction, but for a different reason. With England struggling in Test cricket, Stokes has decided to play county cricket so as to improve his red-ball game instead of playing in the IPL.
