With the presence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Shami, Umesh Yadav is unlikely to return to top-flight cricket as a lead pacer. He, however, can assist the duo beside new revelation Umran Malik (also in the fray for the Team India spot) as Mohd Siraj and Shardul Thakur’s search for form continues in IPL 2022.
Umesh Yadav has been brilliant this season with 10 wickets in 6 matches, including 4-fer against Punjab Kings.
“I haven’t thought that far (World Cup). It will all depend on the selectors and the team management. India will play several white-ball matches before the mega event and I have to first make it to those squads and keep performing there. At InsideSport, we take a look at 3 big reasons why Umesh Yadav should be picked for Team India once again. He had last played for India against Australia in a T20I in February 2019.
IN-FORM
Umesh Yadav could be reckoning for the India squad owing to his exceptional form. He made light work of quality batters against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He has been most lethal in the powerplay overs. With injured Deepak Chahar ruled out for 4 months, Umesh Yadav can grab the opportunity to own his place in India Cricket.
EXPRESS PACE
Umesh Yadav is able to bowl at a consistent pace of 140kmph even at 34 which makes him a lethal weapon in T20 cricket. He can bowl a couple of overs in the powerplays to save Shami & Bumrah for death overs (16-20) with no compromise. He has taken over 50+ wickets in powerplays in 127 IPL matches.
EXPERIENCE
Umesh Yadav has played 52 Tests and 82 limited-overs matches for India in which he has scalped 275 wickets. He can deliver during pressure situations and could be on the chin of the bowlers with searing bouncers at will. His powerplay overs besides Shami & Bumrah could put oppositions in unwanted situations as any of these pacers can blow away any quality batting lineup on their day.
