IPL 2021: MS Dhoni‘s CSK jersey trends on Twitter, what’s so special about it: It doesn’t take much to make a development related to Mahendra Singh Dhoni become a hot topic on Twitter. So, it isn’t much of a surprise that when the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain unveiled his new jersey for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL), through a video on Twitter, social media went gaga over it as well.

IPL 2021: MS Dhoni‘s CSK New jersey trends on Twitter, what so special about it?

CSK New Jersey has become talk of the town becasue of two reasons,

  • first it was released by Dhoni himself and
  • secondly the Jersey is CSK’s attempt to pay tribute to the armed forcess.

The Chennai-based team announced that the camouflage design on the shoulder region of the jersey is meant to pay tribute to the armed forces of India. This drew instant applause and admiration from a large number of people, including some of the teammates of MSD.

The three-time IPL champion side decided to unveil the new No. 7 jersey of their captain in a unique way yesterday by sharing a video of Dhoni unboxing it and checking it out. The decision to honour the armed forces may be related to Dhoni being an honorary member of the Indian Army and having spent time on duty in Kashmir after the completion of the 2019 World Cup.

Suresh Raina, a key member of the CSK team, expressed his support for this gesture by writing: “What a lovely gesture by CSK and MS Dhoni to honour the invaluable services of our army officials. So looking forward to wear this jersey & play with all my heart.”

IPL 2021: MS Dhoni‘s CSK New jersey: It’s worth recalling that during the 2019 World Cup, a controversy had arisen over Dhoni’s wicketkeeping gloves as they sported the ‘Balidan’ badge of the Indian Army. The ICC ruled that this was against their regulations and the former Indian captain to had to wear gloves sans the symbol.

A lot of Indian fans were unhappy at this action of ICC. However, the BCCI, aware of the sensitive nature of the issue, decided not to contest the decision. But with IPL being a tournament fully controlled by the Indian board, they can afford to let teams express their admiration for the sacrifice and valour of Indian defence forces.

During Australia’s tour to India in 2019, prior to the World Cup, the BCCI had decided to show their respect for the jawans in armed service by getting their players to wear army-style camouflage caps during one of the one-dayers. This was in the aftermath of the surgical strikes carried out by Indian Air Force in Pakistan’s territory, in response to the ghastly terror attack in Kashmir valley that took the lives of over 40 CRPF soldiers.

Pakistan Cricket Board had objected to this move of the BCCI and claimed it violated the regulation of ICC which prohibits any political messaging during matches. But the BCCI insisted that it wasn’t a political act but merely a tribute to the soldiers.

Now, with no ICC to constantly seek approval from, CSK can go ahead and show their respect for the armed forces.
