IPL 2021: From hero to zero: Over the last decade, many cricketers have turned their fortunes through IPL. The likes of Chetan Sakariya, Harshal Patel or even Chris Morris have made crores. But there are some who have failed to capitalize on the opportunities and have been shown the doors. West Indies’ pace bowler Sheldon Cottrell falls in the latter category. Apart from Cottrell, Dominic Drakes, Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul have also signed up to be net bowlers.

Sheldon Cottrell who was picked by Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) for Rs 8.5 crore from IPL 2020 auctions has hit rock bottom in the premier T20 tournament. He was released by PBKS ahead of the IPL 2021 and is now only a net bowler in IPL 2021 Phase 2.

IPL 2021: A string of poor performances is to be blamed. Punjab Kings have always looked for fast bowlers and picking up Sheldon Cottrell wasn’t a surprise as they have done so for Riley Meredith or Jhye Richardson. While none of them will return after an unimpressive show in Phase 1, Cottrell has joined the IPL bandwagon as a net bowler in the UAE.

In IPL 2020, Sheldon Cottrell had an unimpressive debut. In six matches, he scalped six wickets but leaked runs at an economy rate of 8.80. He had a horrid time in Sri Lanka with just one wicket in exchange for 8.62 runs an over.

IPL 2021: But he made a good comeback in the series against Australia at home. In three ODIs, he scalped three wickets but his miser bowling spells kept the scoring rate in check. He gave away runs at an economy of 5.68. In the T20 series, he bagged five wickets in four matches in exchange for a 7.53 economy rate and 22.60 average. He is also in West Indies’ T20 World Cup squad. In the CPL 2021, Cottrell has bagged six wickets in as many matches so far.

IPL 2021: While it must be heart-breaking for Sheldon Cottrell to return to IPL and not play, he will be hoping to impress at the nets and make a comeback in IPL 2022 through the mega-auction.
