Indians in Foreign Leagues – IPL Franchises Miffed with BCCI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) stand of ‘NO Indians to be allowed in foreign Leagues‘ hasn’t gone down well with the IPL teams. Be it Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants or others all are miffed with the BCCI’s stand on foreign leagues. InsideSport spoke to some of the officials of some franchises and they called the Indian board’s stand ‘unfair and illogical’: Follow IPL 2023 LIVE Updates & Indian Cricket LIVE Updates with InsideSport.IN

“No Indian player including domestic players can take part in any other league until he is retired from all forms of the game. If any player wants to take part in these upcoming leagues he can only do so when he cuts off all ties with the BCCI.” a BCCI official was quoted on Saturday.

Why Franchises are calling this stand ‘Illogical & Unfair’

  • Chennai Super Kings: This stand means MS Dhoni cannot become MENTOR of CSK’s South Africa league franchise. He can’t even get involved in any other capacity. Even CSK Support staff like Laxmipathy Balaji or others can be associated with the LEAGUE.
  • Mumbai Indians: Be it Sachin Tendulkar (MI Mentor) or Zaheer Khan (Team Director) can get associated with MI Family in UAET20 or ILT20
  • Lucknow Super Giants: Gautam Gambhir (Team Mentor) can’t get associated with LSG’s investment into teams overseas.
  • Same is the case of other franchises – i.e Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders or Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“See we are yet to hear anything officially from the BCCI so far. Whatever we are hearing it is through media reports. If it is true, the stand by BCCI is extremely illogical and unfair.

We could have used our support staff, ecosystem in these foreign ventures. If BCCI stops that it will be really unfair”, said a top franchise management official.

IPL Owners in Foreign Leagues: The world’s richest cricket board BCCI is concerned about the interest of IPL team owners in the foreign leagues. MI, KKR, RR, CSK, LSG and others are buying teams in these upcoming leagues.

One of the BCCI top official reluctantly admitted to InsideSport that they are ‘very concerned‘ on the recent development.

“BCCI has created a brand IPL and the entire sporting world is in awe of it. We have to protect our brand. We are very concerned when the name of IPL owners is being associated with every foreign league.

“They are free to invest wherever they want. But we will not allow any kind brand leveraging on account of IPL. No Indian player past or present would be allowed to join these leagues.” said a upset BCCI official.

Why is BCCI Concerned? Be it the UAE’s ILT20, Cricket South Africa’s T20 league or Caribbean Premier League, IPL Owners are prominent buyers of teams in these leagues.

  • Caribbean Premier League: 3 Out of 5 owners are IPL Team owners i.e Rajasthan ROYALS, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders
  • ILT20 League: KKR, MI, Delhi Capitals owners have taken teams in league promoted by the Emirates Cricket Board
  • CSA T20 League: All 6 teams in the league are owned by IPL Team owners.

BCCI is flooded with requests from various boards and players to allow non-contracted Indian players to play in these leagues. But the Indian board is not willing to relent.

The BCCI has so far restricted their players’ participation in other leagues and the status quo on the subject is set to continue.
