While there were hopes from the Indian contingent to progress further, results on Wednesday have put a nail in the coffin, with Prajnesh being the only shot left for India to improve their dismal Grand Slam record.
US Open 2021: Ankita Raina crashes out after 3-6, 6-2, 4-6 loss to Jamie Loeb
India’s No.1 ranked Tennis player Ankita Raina lost her qualifying match against US’ Jamie Loeb 3-6, 6-2, 4-6 to crash out of the US Open on Tuesday. While she did capitalise on Loeb’s six double faults, Ankita Raina had a bad day with unforced errors. Ankita Raina was off to a bad start after Loeb broke her in the 1st service game and eventually handed over the set 3-6.
The Indian ace came back strongly in the second set, breaking Loeb in the 3rd game and again in the seventh game to take the set 6-2 to force the match into the decider. In the decider, Ankita dropped her serve in the eighth game but got the break back in the next. However, she again slipped 15-40 to be down by two match points. She managed to save one but the American ended the contest by converting her second chance.

US Open 2021: Prajnesh Gunneswaran
India’s top-ranked player Prajnesh Gunneswaran has kicked off his proceeding in the US Open in style. He defeated Brayden Schnur of Canada in straight sets to progress in the top-flight tournament. The two sets were evenly poised throughout the game but Gunneswaran kept his nerves to come out on top of his opponent. He won the first set 6-4 and then went on to win the second set tie-breaker 7-5.

US Open 2021 Qualifiers: Sumit Nagal loses to Juan Pablo Ficovich 5-7, 6-4, 3-6 to bow out of US Open
India’s Sumit Nagal, who is ranked 165 by ATP, was defeated by Argentine player Juan Pablo Ficovich, who is ranked number 246, in the qualifying round of the US Open. The match lasted for two hours and twenty-six minutes with the end results of 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3 in favour of Ficovich. During the game, Juan Pablo Ficovich succeeded in breaking his opponent’s serve 3 times. He also achieved 70% effectiveness in the first service, committed a double fault and took 67% of the service points. Nagal meanwhile will be disappointed by the result, especially going down to an opponent ranked lower than him in the ATP rankings.
US Open 2021: Ramkumar Ramanathan loses to Evgeny Donskoy 6-4, 6-7, 4-6
Ramkumar Ramanathan had the perfect start to his US Open 2021 campaign clinching the first set comfortably by a 6-4 margin. However, his Russian opponent stepped up his game in a tightly contested second set, which Donskoy eventually clinched with a tie-breaker. In the third set, the 26-year-old from Chennai looked a shadow of his former self, with his opponent breaking him up with some ease to clinch the set and the match 6-4, 6-7, 4-6.
