Indian Wells Masters, Women’s Singles Day 1 Highlights: Kaia Kanepi, Caroline Garcia, Zheng Qinwen advance, Beatriz Haddad Maia clinches upset win over Sophi Kenin

Joining Garcia in the 2nd round will be Beatriz Haddad Maia who took down Sofia Kenin with a very good performance. The Brazilian player has been gaining confidence in the past weeks in Mexico and it showed today against Kenin who is playing abysmal tennis. Ever since the pandemic hit, Kenin can’t do anything right on the court and it’s been loss after loss for the American. The former Australian Open champion is now 2-6 on the year with her current singles ranking being 130. If she doesn’t start winning matches soon she will see her ranking drop even further.

Zheng Qinwen (CHN) vs. Vera Zvonareva

Zheng Qinwen has continued her meteoric rise over the past 19 months as she sailed past Vera Zvonareva in the first round at the Indian Wells Maters 2022. This is her first victory in WTA 1000 event. The Chinese 19-year-old, who is now at a career-high of No.74 defeated Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2 to set up a second round clash with Angelique Kerber. By virtue of the victory she extended her head to head lead against Zvonareva to 2-0.

[WC] Robin Montgomery (USA) vs. Kaia Kanepi (EST)

The first main win of Day 1 was owned by Estonian player Kaia Kanepi, whose 6-3, 6-3 triumph over American tennis player Robin Montogmery kicked start Day 1 action at Indian Wells Open. Despite serving 10 double faults in the match, Kanepi still seized the match and advanced into the second-round meeting with Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic.

Clara Burel (FRA) vs. Anhelina Kalinina (UKR)

50th-ranked Anhelina Kalinina bagged her second win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 hammering of Clara Burel in the first round of Indian Wells on Wednesday. This was Kalinina’s second win of the season. She will now face World No. 4 Iga Swiatek in the second round

Alison Riske (USA) vs. [Q] Caty McNally (USA)

American tennis player Alison Riske came through against Caty McNally with a 6-0, 6-3 win in the first round of the Indian Wells Masters. Alison Riske needed just 80 minutes to clinch a victory in an all-U.S. matchup.

Riske earned a second-round matchup against eighth-seeded Garbine Muguruza, a former Wimbledon and French Open champion. The tournament’s top 32 seeds received first-round byes.
