Indian player with most runs in ODI World Cup: Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma in top 3

With India’s World Cup 2023 campaign underway, one would like to know which Indian player has scored the most runs in the ODI World Cup. To no one’s surprise, names like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma pop up, but who are the top 5 run-getters for India?

Indian player with most runs in ODI World Cup: Sachin Tendulkar

The Master Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar, is not only India’s but also the world’s most successful batter in the ODI World Cup.

Tendulkar was part of Team India in six World Cups and amassed 2278 runs in 44 innings. The Little Master also has the most centuries (6) and fifties (15) in World Cup history.

In comparison to his overall ODI average of 44.83, Tendulkar averages 56.95 with the bat while striking at 88.98.

Virat Kohli (1573 runs)

The ICC ODI Cricketer of the Decade (2010s) award winner, Virat Kohli, is placed second on the list of Indian players with the most runs after his idol, Tendulkar.

Kohli has played in four World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023) and averages 58.25 in 34 innings. The batter also has four centuries and ten fifties to his name in ODI World Cups.

Rohit Sharma (1380 runs)

The current Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, was the top scorer (648) in the last edition of the World Cup (2019), falling 26 runs short of the all-time record.

Sharma has played in the last two World Cups and has reached the semifinals in both editions.

The right-hander averages 61.73 in 25 matches with seven centuries and five fifties to his name.

Sourav Ganguly (1006 runs)

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly is not far behind Kohli with 1006 runs. Despite playing fewer matches than Kohli, Ganguly has more centuries than him and averages almost 10 more than him (55.88).

Rahul Dravid (860 runs)

Rahul Dravid, the highest run scorer in the 1999 World Cup, was India’s most dependable middle-order batter.

Dravid averages an incredible 61.42 but has an incredible slow strike rate of 74.97. The right-handed batter also has eight 50+ scores (2 hundreds and 6 fifties).
