Indian Cricket Team Injuries: Something is wrong with Team India’s setup, especially its support staff, when one player is injured after another. After all, the injuries sustained during the Bangladesh tour are, to say the least, disgraceful. Team India players have spent more time in the physio room rehabbing than they have in the field scoring runs and taking wickets. A former Team India trainer has slammed the current setup for its lack of professionalism and the current spate of injuries. It is also reported that BCCI will fire a few support staff members for poor performance. Follow IND vs BAN LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.
Indian Cricket Team Injuries: Former India Trainer SLAMS current set-up, ‘lack of professionalism reason for injuries to Indian cricketers’, BCCI set to fire FEW support staff members: Follow LIVE
A former Team India trainer, a part of the 2011 World Cup winning team support staff, while speaking to a news daily has said that given the number of support staff members, the current state of affairs is a matter of grave concern.
“There have to be the right people to make the system effective. There is a lack of professionalism as far as the strength and conditioning and physical fitness are concerned. Someone has to take responsibility, rather than pointing fingers in various directions,” the member said on the condition of anonymity
On-field injuries, he believes, are uncontrollable, but fitness-related injuries to players are a serious concern. The fact that it has happened twice in the last two years poses a major problem for Team India.
The former Team India support staff member claims that the issue is not with training but with the players’ eating habits. It is the responsibility of the support staff to constantly remind them of what they should and should not eat. He also believes that every player has niggles, but they only become injuries when they are not identified in time.
It is reported that the BCCI is expected to take some harsh steps with respect to the support staff members future. Mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, TK Dilip, India’s fielding coach and Soham Desai India’s strength & conditioning coach are set to face the music besides Nitin Patel.
Out of the 18-member original squad for the Bangladesh tour, only 13 players are currently fit. Mohammad Shami has been ruled out even before the series began. Although Rohit Sharma suffered an unfortunate injury, Deepak Chahar is back at the NCA again with a hamstring injury. Even skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his frustration regarding injuries.
“I agree with Rohit. Things are not alright. We are in the process of overhauling sports science department at the NCA. But that cannot be an excuse for the lapses in injury management. President Binny has made it a priority and we are looking to manage it better. And of course those who are in charge will be questioned,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
Most of the cricketers getting injured have not eve played a lot of cricket this year. Someone like Rohit Sharma, who has been a constant feature in T20Is this year, hasn’t played a lot of Tests and ODIs, largely due to rotation and then due to injuries.
Same goes for Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and others.

‘MISFIRING’ Team India support staff
Soham Desai and Nitin Patel are expected to face the heat, as they belong to the misfiring support staff. Desai who is India’s strength & conditioning coach is under fire for his role in Bangladesh. On the tour, India have lose Deepak Chahar to yet another hamstring injury. Apart from him, Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Sen are also out injured. Post the Bangladesh series, CAC will review strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai’s role.
Back in India, Nitin Patel rushed Jasprit Bumrah’s return. As a result, an unfit Bumrah missed the T20 World Cup. Deepak Chahar’s repeated injuries are also a big red flag for the BCCI. Rohit also questioned NCA’s role, saying players cannot represent India half-fit.
“I mean there are definitely a few injury concerns. We need to try and get to the bottom of it. I don’t know what exactly it is. Maybe they’re playing too much cricket. We need to try and monitor those guys because it’s important to understand when they come for India, they need to be a 100%, in fact more than 100%. They cannot represent India half-fit,” Rohit said after India’s loss to Bangladesh in 2nd ODI.
