India at Tokyo Olympics – Indian Archers at Olympics LIVE: How the Archery format at Olympics will work?
Individual Event: The archery competition starts with a ranking round on the day of the Opening Ceremony.
– All 64 men and women shoot 72 arrows and are then ranked from first to 64th based on their total scores.
– After that, they compete in pairs based on their rankings, 1st vs 64th, 2nd vs 63rd, and so on.
– The loser of the individual elimination leaves the competition and the winner advances to the next round until 2 athletes remain to contest for gold.
– The two semi-final losers compete for bronze.
Individual matches are determined using a set system. Each set consists of 3 arrows. The athlete with the highest score in the set the total of their three arrows gets two set points. If the athletes are tied, each receives one set point. The first athlete to six set points wins the match.
Team Event
– The team event also works on the set system as well. However, rather than 3 arrows per set, 6 arrows per set are shot by each team.
– In the team event, the teams shoot arrows in groups of 3s. This means a team of three archers shoots 3 arrows. After both the teams finish shooting, the team with a higher score gets 2 points.
– The team that gets to 5 points first, wins the match. In an event of a tie, every player from each team shoots one arrow.
India at Tokyo Olympics: Indian Archery Team at Olympics –
Atanu Das: Atanu Das will be representing India in the men’s recurve individual, men’s recurve team, and if he qualifies in the recurve mixed team. He made his international debut in 2008, and since then, he has been an integral part of the Indian archery team. The 29-years-old archer has seven world cup medals to his name, with two gold medals coming up in the 2021 World cup. If everything goes well in qualification, mixed event pair of Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari is expected to win a medal for India in Tokyo Olympics, as they did recently at the World cup in Paris.
Tarundeep Rai: Tarundeep Rai is the oldest archer in the Indian contingent. At the age of 37, he will be representing India in men’s recurve individual, men’s recurve team, and if he qualifies in the men’s recurve mixed team. Tokyo Olympics will be his third Olympics, and he is expected to play a key role in the men’s recurve team, even along with Atanu Das and Pravin Jadhav.
Pravin Jadhav: Pravin Jadhav is the youngest archer in the Indian contingent. At the 2019 World Archery Championships, he was a member of the first Indian team to qualify for the final since 2005; the team received the silver medal. His accuracy at the Tokyo Olympics is very important for the men’s recurve team to finish on the podium. The 25-years-old archer will be competing in the men’s recurve individual, men’s recurve team, but he looks unlikely to qualify for the mixed team event.
Deepika Kumari: Deepika Kumari is the reigning world number one in women’s Archery. Recently, she was in the limelight for winning a hat-trick of gold medals at the Archery World cup stage 3 in Paris. She is the best bet for Indian in this Olympics in two events, women’s recurve individual and recurve mixed team event. Tokyo Olympics will be her second Olympics, after the first one at the 2012 London Olympics.
