INDIA WI ODI Series – Covid Outbreak in Indian Camp, Mayank Agarwal named replacement – Opener Mayank Agarwal was named replacement after five players tested positive for Covid-19, raising a huge question mark on the first ODI. Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer tested positive and were ruled out of the first two ODIs in Ahmedabad beginning Sunday, February 6. Follow IND vs WI Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Covid Outbreak in Indian Camp: Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Navdeep Saini are four members of the Indian squad who have tested positive for Covid. Apart from the players, three members of the support staff including throwdown specialist Raghu have also tested positive according to information available with InsideSport. The first ODI against the West Indies is to be played on February 6, Sunday & now the same is in jeopardy.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s ODI squad after seven members, including three players of Team India (Senior Men) tested positive for COVID-19 following three rounds of RT-PCR testing,” BCCI said in a statement late Wednesday night.

Covid Outbreak in Indian Camp: As all close contacts must isolate for a minimum of 7 days as per India’s Covid guidelines, the BCCI may be forced to include more players from the T20 squad as replacements. For now, only Mayank has been named as replacement. India arrived with 26 players barring Axar Patel, who also tested positive before reaching Ahmedabad.

“Players of both teams have been asked to isolate as a precaution. Three players and support staff have tested positive and have been isolated. We are monitoring the situation. There is no decision on the series. It will go ahead. If needed, we will bring in more replacements,” a senior BCCI official had told InsideSport earlier on Wednesday.

IND vs WI: Details of the Covid-19 cases in India camp

  • Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and fast bowler Navdeep Saini’s (standby player) RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31st) have returned positive results.
  • Fielding Coach T. Dilip and Security Liaison Officer B. Lokesh’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31st) have returned positive results.
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad’s RT-PCR test conducted on Tuesday (February 1st) has returned a positive result. He had tested negative during the first round of testing on Monday.
  • Shreyas Iyer and Sports Massage Therapist Rajeev Kumar’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Wednesday (February 2nd) have returned positive results. Both had tested negative in the first two rounds of testing.
  • The players began assembling on Sunday and were in a three-day quarantine at the Hatt Hotel following which they were to begin practice from Thursday. However, now the practice session has been cancelled. The infected players now have been put up on a different floor.

Meanwhile, Axar Patel, who was supposed to join the team in Ahmedabad could not as he also tested positive before arriving. He was picked for the T20 team and will join the team once he returns three negative Covid tests after 7 days.

Covid Outbreak in Indian Camp: Considering that the third wave is still raging in the county, the Gujarat Cricket Association had instructed the ODI series to be held behind closed doors. However, the three T20Is in Kolkata were to be held with 75% of the capacity at Eden Gardens. After the Covid outbreak, it could change.

The squad has 26 players with both ODI and T20s combined and the likes of Ishan Kishan and Venkatesh Iyer are likely to be added to ODI squad after the Covid outbreak. At present, Rohit Sharma is the only opener available and Virat Kohli could be forced to open if they do not call in replacements. KL Rahul will only join from the 2nd ODI. Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad will miss the first two ODIs.
