INDIA vs WI Series: India selection MADNESS – The South Africa debacle, especially in ODIs, was supposed to be a lesson for Team India and the selectors. From the West Indies series, the aim was to get the ball rolling for the 2023 World Cup. Instead, it was a SELECTION MADNESS on Wednesday. Kuldeep Yadav and Deepak Hooda were called up without proving themselves in domestic. After backing Rahul Chahar for long, the selectors suddenly turned to Ravi Bishnoi while completely overlooking the former Mumbai Indians spinner. Follow IND vs WI Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.
To put into perspective, Kuldeep Yadav hasn’t played any competitive match since July 2021 as he was recovering from an injury and had to go under the knife. Deepak Hooda’s best contribution in Vijay Hazare was to score a century against Karnataka but he wasn’t even in the top run-scorers and neither did he bowl full-time. In the IPL, he was pretty average.

Kuldeep Yadav: Missing in action for six months, Kuldeep Yadav was called back in as Team India wants to rejuvenate the wrist-spin option once again. The famed Kul-Cha pair will return as R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja continue to nurse injuries. Also, with Ashwin’s poor returns in South Africa, the selectors want to do away with finger spin once again. But why not Rahul Chahar? It will be a mystery that needs to be solved.
Deepak Hooda: By all logical assessments, Deepak Hooda should not be called up. He failed to impress in the IPL 2021 and didn’t do much in the Vijay Hazare Trophy either. The only significant score he had was against Karnataka when he slammed a ton. In IPL< he scored 160 at an average of 16.00. With the ball, he bagged just two wickets at an economy rate of 8.50. Then, on what basis Hooda has been recalled after four years? Answer? Nobody knows.

Ruturaj Gaikwad: The youngster was removed from T20 squad and was placed in ODIs as the fourth opener with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma all set to open against West Indies. As KL Rahul is the designated third opener in Rohit or Dhawan’s absence, it remains to be seen what selectors’ plans with Gaikwad are, who is still waiting for a chance after impressive IPL 2021 and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
What happens to Prithvi Shaw? – Prithvi Shaw was recalled to the Test squad after a record-breaking Vijay Hazare Trophy last season. Yet, he failed to break into the Test team with Mayank Agarwal being preferred for the backup opening role.
Rahul Chahar: The young spinner suddenly became toast for selectors when he was called up for the T20 World Cup. He didn’t play a single match after struggling with form. He was dropped from the squad and wasn’t called in for South Africa and West Indies series. Is the team management reluctant to back Chahar over Kuldeep and Bishnoi?

Seam-bowling allrounder: After declaring that Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar are not ready for the all-rounders’ role, selectors made a U-turn on them after the South Africa series. Both are now designated seam all-rounders in Hardik Pandya’s absence in ODIs. Rishi Dhawan despite his impressive showing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy was ignored while Venkatesh Iyer was relegated to the T20s only, showing a lack of faith in his 50-over abilities.
