INDIA vs WI ODI: KL Rahul’s to doubters, ‘Confident in my leadership skills’, also feels ‘Indian WHITE-BALL cricket needs transformation’

“It’s a huge honour and it’s a dream come true to represent my country and lead my country. Yes, the results didn’t go our way but I think there were massive learning. We are at a stage right now where we have World Cups as the focus and we are working towards getting better as a team. I feel like we have played very good cricket over the last four or five years but it’s also time for us to get better and transform our white-ball cricket,” KL Rahul told Sports Today in an exclusive chat.

India Next Test Captain – KL Rahul on Captaincy? KL Rahul’s captaincy during the tour has been badly criticized. First it was former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar who raised question mark on his leadership credentials. Now PTI has quoted a very damaging statement by BCCI’s official on Rahul’s captaincy

According to a PTI Report, KL Rahul perhaps blew his chance towards being a long-term captaincy option for the Indian cricket team during the South Africa series.

“Did KL Rahul by any stretch look like a captain to you?” a senior BCCI official counter-questioned PTI when asked if he would be considered for the Test captaincy factoring in Rohit Sharma’s track record of injuries.

But KL Rahul has a message for the doubters. Rahul during the interview stated that he has full confidence in his leadership skills.

I am confident in my leadership skills’

“We are a work in progress as a team. I learned so much while leading. Losses make you so much stronger than starting off with victories. My career has always been that way. I have always got everything slowly. I am confident in my leadership skills and I know that I can bring out the best from my players. I know I can do well for my country and franchise,” Rahul added.

Why KL Rahul’s leadership skills have been questioned by Gavaskar & many others?

India began the South Africa tour by winning the opening Test in Centurion before suffering five consecutive defeats across two formats.

Under Rahul India not only lost the ODI series but also the momentum gained via win in the 1st test. KL Rahul was asked to captain the side in 2nd test as regular captain Virat Kohli woke up injured on the morning of the 2nd test match.

  • KL Rahul was complete out of sort as captain during the 2nd test. He was more of a reactive captain than a pro-active one.
  • If the test was a dampned, his leadership skills in the ODI Series were disaster.
  • KL Rahul, given the captain’s hat, failed to hold together a disintegrated bunch, be it with his individual performances or leadership qualities.
  • He seemed out of ideas whenever a partnership was being built. In the first two ODIs, he often miscalculated Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s overs, resulting in the two most experienced pacemen being used more in the middle stages than in the slog overs.
  • His bowling changes didn’t work in the middle overs in the ODI series and after watching Temba Bavuma make some inspired moves like starting the attack with Aiden Markram, he introduced Ravichandran Ashwin early in one game but that was more of a reactive move rather than a pro-active one.

Sunil Gavaskar Question’s Rahul Leadership Skills: This led to batting legend and pundit Sunil Gavaskar raise a key question on Rahul’s ascendancy as captain, pointing out that the 29-year-old is yet to even lead his state team, Karnataka.

“Rahul doesn’t have much experience of captaincy. He has only captained Punjab Kings in the last two IPLs. Apart from that, not in any format tournament — Ranji Trophy or List A. That’s why you need to have patience when you think of him as captain. Even if you look at his captaincy in IPL, Punjab Kings haven’t done anything of note in the last two years,” Gavaskar said on India Today.

India now host West Indies for three one-dayers and three Twenty20 Internationals next month followed by a Series against Sri Lanka.

The return of Rohit in the home series against West Indies and Sri Lanka is expected to give the team some stability. Rohit’s handling of the bowlers and ability to motivate the group will also play a role in lifting the players’ spirits.
