The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday confirmed that Shaheen Afridi was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2022 and the upcoming series against England. The 21-year-old suffered a right knee ligament injury during Pakistan’s win in Galle last month. Afridi has been advised 4-6 weeks of rest by PCB’s advisory committee and independent specialists. He is expected to return to competitive cricket in October before the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Although he has made progress during his rehabilitation in Rotterdam, it is now clear he will require more time and is likely to return to competitive cricket in October.”
“PCB’s Sports & Exercise Medicine Department will be working closely with the player over the coming weeks to ensure his safe return to competitive cricket.”

The news comes up as a big thumbs up to Team India who struggled to deal with Shaheen’s pace and accuracy in the last meeting between the two teams. Afridi had dismissed both Indian openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma cheaply and then got the wicket of then captain Virat Kohli. Pakistan had then romped to a 10-wicket win, their first against India in World Cups.
Despite being ruled out, Shaheen Afridi will stay with the squad to complete his rehabilitation. His replacement for the Asia Cup will be announced in the meantime. The Pakistan side will arrive in Dubai from Rotterdam on Monday.
