India Tour of South-Africa: Rohit Sharma speaks out on his captaincy philosophy: “I’ll do these four things as Indian captain”
Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Philosphy
1. Team over individual: Much like new head coach Rahul Dravid, new captain Rohit Sharma revealed that the focus will be on winning silverware and not breaking individual records. Speaking to Boria Majumdar on Backstage, Rohit Sharma said, “When you play the sport, you have to achieve the best, in cricket it’s ICC tournament so whatever runs or hundreds me or anyone scores it doesn’t matter, only thing matter is winning the championship.”
Rohit was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy wins, but suffered heartbreak as vice-captain during the 2017 Champions Trophy, 2019 World Cup and 2021 T20 World Cup.
2. Play the right players and give them confidence: India’s new white-ball captain Rohit Sharma added that a lot of work has to picking the right players and then giving them the necessary rope to make the most of their chance. Kohli, under Ravi Shastri’s tenure, has been guilty of not proving players with the adequate opportunity to express their potential and Sharma is keen to address that issue and provide players with the confidence to succeed at the highest level.
“My captaincy philosophy is to play the right players, back the players from behind – more work is done off-field with the planning, strategy, give the confidence to the players, work so hard, ” he said.
3. Prepare for the worst: Rohit Sharma has been involved in some nail-biting knockout ties with India and the Mumbai Indians and wants his team to deal with those pressure situations exceedingly well. The Hit-Man wants his team to be prepared for the worst and then deliver the killer blow when required. He said, “I want players to prepare for the worst, like 10 for 3 in the semi or final or in group stage of ICC tournaments – what we will do – that is what we will prepare for that in next 1 year – how our middle order going to react”.

4. Less importance to the captain: Rohit Sharma has time and again reiterated that a captain is the least important person in the team. He believes that a leader should be at the back giving the players the right push and confidence to play their selves in and make a mark and give them confidence. Sharma has had a successful tenure as Mumbai Indians captain, winning five IPL titles, the most in history.
“What I have done at Mumbai is brilliant because of the players I have had. Honestly speaking, I have very little role to play there. The team that I had was fantastic. I want to give credit to, firstly, the management for creating such solid gun players and then creating that atmosphere for players to go and perform,” he added.
