India tour of England: Who is Haseeb Hameed? All you need to know about England batsman – England Cricket Board on Wednesday announced a 17 member squad for the first two games of the five-match Test series against Team India. Opening batsman Haseeb Hameed made comeback into the national side after five years. Hameed scored a brilliant century in the practise match against India on Wednesday. Interestingly, he made his debut in Test cricket against India in 2016.

Haseeb Hameed’s debut

Haseeb became the youngest debutant to open for England in a Test match when he played in the first Test against India at Rajkot in 2016. In his first Test, Hameed scored his maiden Test half-century, becoming the third-youngest England batsman to reach 50 runs. He ended scoring 82 runs in that innings. He eventually was dismissed for 82; this followed on from promising debut innings of 31. (England Cricket Board)

Performance against India in 2016

In the second Test, he made 13 in England’s first innings, before making 25 in the second innings as England were dismissed for 158 to lose the game by 246 runs. In the third test, he was dismissed for nine in the first innings as England made 283. He broke his finger in his 1st innings dismissal but still went on to score an unbeaten half-century batting, below his usual opening position, at number 8 in the second innings, although India won the game by eight wickets. It was later announced he would miss the rest of the tour after flying home to have surgery on his finger. In the three-Test, he scored 219 runs at an average of 43.80 with two fifties in it.

Haseeb Hameed makes comeback

Hameed made his return to the England squad for the Test series against New Zealand in 2021 but didn’t feature, before being named again in the squad for the series against India. Now he has been picked for the first two Tests against Team India and it will be interesting to see how he performs in the first two games.
