Prithvi Shaw, who was dropped from the Test side after enduring a poor run in Australia, is back in the fold after a fine run of form in domestic cricket, IPL and India tour of Sri Lanka. With him, Suryakumar Yadav is the other one to be picked for the England series.
India Tour of England: Suryakumar Yadav has been in red-hot form in IPL and international cricket. In Sri Lanka, he has already scored two half-centuries. It will be his maiden Test call-up and is considered as a backup for Ajinkya Rahane, who is nursing a hamstring injury.
“All-rounder Washington Sundar had taken an injection on his right-hand bowling finger. However, his recovery will take longer than expected and he is not bowling-fit. He is ruled out of the remainder of the tour,” the BCCI said.
“Fast bowler Avesh Khan suffered a blow to his left thumb on Day 1 of the warm-up game. He was taken for an X-Ray and the result confirmed a fracture. A specialist was consulted for further management of his injury. He is ruled out of India’s Tour of England,” it further added.
India Tour of England: Ever since Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a stress fracture on left shin, Prithvi Shaw’s name has been doing rounds with the team management in the UK requesting the Chetan Sharma-led Selection Committee to send Prithvi Shaw to England. However, with the Sri Lanka series ongoing and UK’s quarantine rules, selectors did not pay heed. But with Washington Sundar also ruled out due to a finger injury, Prithvi Shaw, Jayant Yadav and Suryakumar Yadav are all set to join the team in England as per an Indian Express report.
India tour of England: While Shubman Gill has returned to India due to a shin injury, Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan will return home shortly. Both sustained finger injuries during the practice match against Select County XI in Durham.
Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are currently in Sri Lanka for the limited-overs series. Both are in red-hot form and could be of benefit during the 5-match Test series. The opening Test will kick start on August 4 at Trent Bridge.
Suryakumar Yadav is seen as a backup for Ajinkya Rahane as the latter is dealing with a hamstring problem. However, with the confidence team management has shown in the Mumbai batsman, he could be considered in place of Cheteshwar Pujara, who is struggling with his form. But there will be no direct replacement for Avesh Khan as there are plenty of pace bowlers in the India squad.
