India T20 WC squad: Ex-coach Ravi Shastri wants new BCCI President Roger Binny to intervene in IPL vs country debate after Bumrah, Chahar injuries, says ‘If an India player needs to be rested in IPL, so be it’
Ravi Shastri has urged former teammate Roger Binny to look into the IPL vs Country debate and protect star India players ahead of the major tournaments. India were dealt with serious blow after Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar were ruled out with their respective back injuries.
Bumrah has featured sporadically for India over the last 24 months due to injuries, while being available for the Mumbai Indians during the IPL. Shastri, who was the head coach during India’s last World Cup campaign, said that the players should have the option of resting during the IPL.
Speaking to veteran journalist Ayaz Memon at a ‘Meet-the-media programme’, Shastri said, “With the volume of cricket that exists today, it’s extremely important that you get the balance right of how much a player plays. When should he be rested? And there, a (BCCI) president can play a big role.”
He added, “Tomorrow, if a cricketer, for the sake of playing for India, needs to be rested in the IPL for a certain number of games, so be it. Where, a (BCCI) president has to sit with the franchise and explain that he’s extremely important for India first, and then the franchise.”

Speaking on Binny’s ascendency to BCCI President, he said, “I’m delighted, because he was my colleague in the World Cup. There’s continuity there because he was the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. So, he moves on to become the president of the BCCI. And I’m extremely happy because he’s a World Cup winner, who’s the president for the first time in the history of the BCCI. His credentials are unquestionable. He’s got all the boxes ticked to take up this post.”
