India T20 WC Exit: Rahul Dravid Report Card: One of the legends of Indian cricket, Rahul Dravid is facing some serious scrutiny as a coach after a year in his job. India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2022 has ended in yet another debacle or let’s say humiliation. The Men in Blue, led by Rohit Sharma, were knocked out of the tournament with England sealing a 10-wicket win in Adelaide. A year into the job, Dravid has failed to deliver silverware, has the only Test in England, lost both ODI & Test series in South Africa. As questions begin to surface, BCCI is set to review Dravid’s performance after the Australia series. Follow Indian cricket live and T20 World Cup LIVE updates on Insidesport.IN

India are yet to lift an ICC trophy since their success in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Dravid was backed by the BCCI to end their barren run. But the former captain has failed to deliver the success promised. While a change is not in order, Dravid — India’s costliest coach at Rs 10 Crore per year contract — is under pressure. When the new Cricket Advisory Committee comes in next month, they will sit down with Dravid to ready the blueprint for the next two World Cups.

“Yes, there will be some tough calls to take. It’s end of a cycle and that’s how it goes with failures or success. The turnaround for T20 World Cup is short. As for Dravid, we have time till Australia series. Once the new CAC comes in, we will consult and a take a call. But with 2023 WC around, don’t think it’s the right call,” a senior BCCI official told Insidesport.

While India have found plenty of success in the Bilateral series under Rahul Dravid, most of the wins have come against teams ranked lower in the ICC Rankings. The Men in Blue coasted to wins over Sri Lanka and New Zealand at home, with Kiwis also stealing a draw under India’s noses last year.

While the schedule saw India play a lot of T20 matches, India remained a home track bully for the most part. India have found success at home against South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Away from home, Rahul Dravid’s biggest achievement so far is winning T20 and ODI series against England and West Indies. But none prepared them for the conditions in Australia.

In the Asia Cup, where India started as favourites, Rohit Sharma and Co suffered a humiliating exit, being knocked out in the Super 4 stage. Sri Lanka and Pakistan reached the final, with the latter having defeated India in one of the matches in Dubai.

In the T20 World Cup, India had to play out of their skins to defeat Pakistan and Bangladesh. Against a strong South Africa, India suffered. Ashwin, who is considered a match-up for David Miller, was no match in challenging conditions at Perth.

In the one-off Test against England, India conceded an advantage to lose the match in Edgbaston. The loss denied India a chance to win a historic series, having been 2-1 ahead heading into the match. The Men in Blue also failed to make most of their 1-0 lead in SouthAfrica, eventually conceding the Test series 2-1. The ODI leg of the tour was lost 3-0.

Rahul Dravid Report Card: What has gone wrong for Rahul Dravid?

  • Inconsistency in the selection, and game plans.
  • ‘Safe’ approach to games, lack of risks in T20Is.
  • Player injuries, workload management.
  • Lack of role clarity among players.
  • Excessive experimentation with a lack of results.
  • Multiple captains: 8 in his tenure.
  • Persistence with underperforming players.

During Dravid’s time, India persisted with Rishabh Pant but the wicketkeeper was shunted up and down the order, only to be thrown into the deep end against Zimbabwe and England. 37-year-old Dinesh Karthik was earmarked as India’s finisher, but his selection and form both created problems for India.

Harshal Patel was persisted despite his one-dimensional skillset and later taken to Australia, where he warmed the bench. The likes of Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik were all considered only for Dravid to opt for the same bowling attack that cost them the T20 World Cup last year. Umesh Yadav was also recalled for the series vs Austalia for the first time in three years.

The likes of Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Ravi Bishnoi were given a handful of opportunities only for them to be dropped before the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. Mohammad Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin were not in the scheme of things, before making a late dash to the squad. Both players had a less-than-desirable effect Down Under.

Yuzvendra Chahal was dropped from the T20 WC squad last year but made a startling comeback finishing as the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2022. The wily leggie, however, was dropped to the bench in favour of Axar Patel, even as the likes of Adil Rashid, Wanindu Hasaranga and Ish Sodhi made their mark in the tournament with wrist spin.

To his credit, Rahul Dravid has nurtured the next generation of talent with the likes of Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer all ready to make a mark in the side. However, the Indian head coach will have to soon back up his process with results, something his predecessor Ravi Shastri also failed to do.

Shastri led India to memorable wins overseas, especially in Australia and England, but his failure to lead India to an ICC trophy ultimately cost him his job. Dravid has fallen short in both tournaments he has led India in as coach – the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.

Dravid is in no danger of losing his post, with his job secure until the series against Australia at home next year. India will also kick start their 2023 World Cup preparations, with the Men in Blue hosting the tournament in November next year. The former India captain will be consulted regarding his role, and a decision will be accordingly taken by the CAC.

Dravid had the favour of both Chief Selector Chetan Sharma and former president Sourav Ganguly. While the latter has been replaced by Roger Binny, the former is also on his way in the coming months. Whether that changes the BCCI and the CAC’s stance on Dravid remains to be seen.
