England had hammered India by 10 wickets in the World Cup semi-finals, extending their barren run in ICC events. India last won an ICC event in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy under M S Dhoni’s leadership. The last world title came at home in 2011. With the 2023 World Cup to be held in India, BCCI seeks to address India’s drought in ICC events.

The selection panel led by Chetan Sharma were shown the door post the World Cup but a new panel is yet to be formed. The committee was sacked in November but it continues to track the ongoing Ranji Trophy and also picked the team for three T20s and ODIs against Sri Lanka.

The Cricket Advisory Committee, which was formed earlier this month, met in Mumbai on Friday to shortlist the list of candidates for the selectors’ posts. The panel comprises Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik. Chetan Sharma and Harvinder Singh have reapplied for the job. The others who have applied include former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad and former India wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia.

Why do India need a fresh approach in T20?

  • Since the inception of IPL, India have not won the T20 WC trophy.
  • With a lot of talent coming through IPL, the trophy has been a surprising absence.
  • Currently, India have a large pool of players available in T20s.
  • However, India’s orthodox approach has been the biggest deterrent.
  • Instead of trusting new players and promoting domestic talents, India have stuck to tried-and-tested veterans.
  • But with T20 World Cup 2022 disappointment, India want a new approach in coaching.
  • Furthermore, with the amount of cricket increasing, Dravid has a lot on his plate at the moment.

With Hardik Pandya now the T20 captain, most certainly a long-term one, BCCI is now looking at a rejig at the coaching level. InsideSport understands that BCCI is already exploring a replacement for Rahul Dravid. The board sources informed InsideSport that BCCI is also open to appointing a foreign coach for the Indian T20 Team. However, a final decision will only be taken after consultation with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).

“Nothing is final yet. We are exploring multiple options. Rahul is very much in our plans. But there is a workload on him too. Our entire focus shifts to World Cup at home. The message to everyone is clear, we have to win the World Cup. So, for obvious reasons, the focus is not on T20s at the moment. There are a lot of discussions going on. But for a final decision, CAC and the selectors have to be involved. And it will take a little while,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
