With Shikhar Dhawan dropped, selectors opened up the opening spot for the competition. Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill were competing for the spot to partner Rohit Sharma. The team management has given KL Rahul a new role to bat at No 4 and also keep wickets. With Ishan Kishan out, KL Rahul will keep wickets for India in Guwahati.

Shubman Gill to open with Rohit Sharma – Indian Captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed that he will open the innings with Shubman Gill. Ishan Kishan had slammed the fastest double century in ODIs while Shubman Gill has had a purple patch since making his debut. The difficult decision has been taken. Kishan, will have to wait for his chances, as the team management has decided to give Gill, an added run due to his consistency.

Shubman Gill having scored 638 runs in 12 matches was always going to be a difficult choice to keep him out of the XI. Gill has a century and four half-centuries in 12 innings at an average of 70.88 and a strike rate of 102.57.

Ishan on the other hand scored 417 runs in 7 innings at an average of 59.57 in 2022. In his last outing, he also scored a double-century against Bangladesh. Considering that, Ishan has the best to make it to the Playing XI.

Shreyas Iyer or Suryakumar Yadav? – Another difficult decision will be on Shreyas Iyer vs Suryakumar Yadav. Shreyas was India’s top-scorer in ODIs in 2022. But SKY is World’s Best T20 batsman and has dominated 2022 besides scoring his 3rd century in the last match. But there is place for only one. It’s likely that Shreyas will get the nod instead of fellow Mumbai teammate SKY.

Who will partner Shami? – With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out and Mohammad Shami returning, India now have place for two pacers. Hardik Pandya will fulfil the role of 4th seamer. Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik are fighting for the two spots.

Siraj has been impressive in ODIs of late while Umran’s pace gives India new dynamics. Arshdeep is also the only left-arm seamer available in the squad, making it a difficult choice.
