With the Ranji Trophy returning to its full-fledged format, BCCI has asked contracted Indian stars to make themselves available for the domestic season. The move comes under new president Roger Binny to help players remain fit at all times. As a result, a host of Indian stars will be in action when the second-round matches kick off on Tuesday, December 20.
Out-of-favour stars Ishant Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane were already available for their state teams, while Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson also joined their respective state teams. Now for the second round, Suryakumar Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have made themselves available. The star Indian duo will play their first red-ball match since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ranji Trophy: Indian stars return
- India’s white-ball stars have returned to red-ball cricket during the Ranji Trophy.
- Sanju Samson & Ishan Kishan featured in the first-round match for Kerala & Jharkhand.
- Suryakumar Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have made themselves available from round 2.
- Out-of-favour stars Ishant Sharma, Hanuma Vihari & Ajinkya Rahane are also in action.
- The move comes after BCCI urged players to shun rest and make themselves available in domestic cricket.
- Only all format players are to be afforded rest under BCCI’s new diktat.

When appointed as president, Roger Binny had made it clear that Indian cricketers should play in domestic. Now, players have been asked to represent states if they are not playing international series during then. As things stand, only multi-format players are allowed to rest during international breaks.
“It had to happen. They need match practice to stay fit. With many injuries of late, we must have players ready for all formats. As President indicated, all Indian players barring all-format guys should play in domestic,” BCCI official told InsideSport

Following India’s T20 World Cup exit, the BCCI were criticised for not allowing Indian players to seek opportunities abroad in franchise leagues. President Binny, head coach Rahul Dravid and several others opined that the domestic structure would simply collapse. Now, with India’s contracted stars also in action, there is further incentive for the state association and the players.
The second round of Ranji Trophy matches begins on Tuesday, December 20. Select matches will be live telecasted on the Star Sports Network. The live stream of the same will be available on Disney+Hotstar.
