World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen cruised past into the second round of the ongoing India Open, which is part of the BWF World Tour 500 tournament series, at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall on Wednesday.
The Indian shuttler was pushed to the distance in the opening game by Adham Hatem Elgamal but he emerged victorious by 21-15. The Egyptian player in the second game proved no match for the third-seed as the 20-year-old closed the match in just 25 minutes by winning 21-7.
Sen had a breakthrough season in 2021 and will hope to continue the good run in what will his debut on home turf this week. Seceded third, Lakshya has been handed an easy start to the tournament, facing an unheralded Adham Hatem Elgamal.

Sen will be featuring at the Indian Open for the first time in his career and the 20-year-old will aim to cap off the occasion with a fine start on Wednesday. Seeded third for the tournament, Sen will go up against Egypt’s Adhan Hatem Elgamal.

Lakshya Sen had a good outing in the last season as he reached the final of the Dutch Open, made it to the semifinals at Hylo, and then entered the knockout stage of the World Tour Finals on his debut. However, the icing on the cake was his bronze at the World Championships, which helped him to emulate his mentor Prakash Padukone and compatriot B Sai Praneeth.
Buoyed by the podium finish, Sen is not looking back and aiming for the title in Delhi. He said, “This is the first time I will be playing the India Open. The last two editions were cancelled due to the pandemic. So I am looking forward to making the most of this opportunity and win the title.”
