India New ODI Captain: Rohit Sharma replaces Virat Kohli – The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) on Wednesday named Rohit Sharma as India’s new ODI Captain. He will take over the full-time role from the South Africa series in January. With Rohit Sharma appointed as the new ODI captain, Virat Kohli has now only the captaincy of longest format under his name.
Rohit Sharma had been recently appointed as the full-time T20I captain after Virat Kohli had announced his decision to step down from the role citing workload management. Ever since Kohli announced his decision to quit T20I captaincy, Rohit Sharma’s name for the next white-ball captain was almost certain and today, the Indian cricket board just put a stamp on Rohit’s name. The Maharashtra-born cricketer will be India’s 24th ODI captain.

More important than the announcement of the team to South Africa is the fact that Rohit Sharma is the captain across T20 and ODI cricket. Clearly this is looking ahead to 2023.

Along with white-ball captaincy, Rohit Sharma has also been given the responsibility to play Virat Kohli’s deputy in the longest format. Rohit’s appointment is also being seen as India’s preparations for the 2023 World Cup as India has failed to win an ICC tournament since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
