India Cricket Team Overhaul: India T20 captaincy: Team India is set for a big shake-up. Rohit Sharma is all set to lose his T20 captaincy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors however will trust Rohit to lead Team India in ODIs and Tests at least until 2023 World Cup. The opener will have a chance to repent the ghosts of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in 2023 with the ODI World Cup in India. InsideSport has learnt that before India’s three-match T20 and ODI series against Sri Lanka, Hardik Pandya would be elevated to T20 captaincy status. According to a reliable source inside the BCCI, Rohit will continue to captain India for ODIs and TEST matches.

“See the consensus is there that now is the time to change. All of us feel Rohit Sharma first of all still has lot to offer. But at the same time he has too much on his plate. And mind it, he is not getting any younger.”

“For the T20 World CUP 2024, we need to prepare now. Hardik is right fit for the role. Selectors will meet and officially announce Hardik as India’s captain before next T20 assignment”, confirmed a top source in the BCCI.

Change in Captain to be announced soon –

  • T20 Cricket: Hardik Pandya to be officially announced as India captain before SriLanka Series
  • ODI Cricket: Rohit Sharma to keep ODI Captaincy till World CUP 2023
  • Test Captaincy: Rohit Sharma will stay as India’s captain at least till the current WTC cycle.

With KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant falling out of favour as future T20s captains, Hardik Pandya has got the backing.

India were the winners the last time an ODI World Cup was held on their soil back in 2011. But since then, they haven’t won any World Cup. Their last ICC trophy was nearly a decade ago in 2013 when MS Dhoni led them to the Champions Trophy title.

With all these facts in mind, Rohit Sharma will have a huge responsibility on his shoulders to lead India to the title. Notably, Rohit was not part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team and will be eager to end the drought.
