India Cricket Overhaul: India Cricket New Coach: BCCI is keen on having VVS Laxman as the next India coach should Rahul Dravid steps down following World Cup 2023. Dravid survived an early removal from T20s and BCCI did not want to rejig personnel with the ODI World Cup inbound. But the axe would fall on Dravid should India fail to win the WC. BCCI has zeroed in on NCA Director VVS Laxman as the new head coach should Dravid leave. Follow India Cricket LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.
There was a notion in favour of split coaching with a specialist T20 coach replacing Dravid. It would have been the first time it happened in Indian cricket. However, BCCI shot down the idea after a discussion with coach and the captain.

However, Rahul Dravid despite coming with a big reputation hasn’t yet proved his worth as a coach. India’s only positive under him has been dominance at home and overseas in bilateral cricket.
But India have lost the Asian Cup, T20 World Cup and to SouthAfrica away and even the ODI series against Bangladesh. Hence, the Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup 2023 will determine his future.
So far, VVS Laxman has only been in charge of insignificant tours and series. However, with Dravid set to be with ODI and Test squad, Laxman will be in charge of the Hardik Pandya-led T20 team in many series throughout 2023.
“Nothing is final yet. We are exploring multiple options. Rahul is very much in our plans. But there is a workload on him too. Our entire focus shifts to World Cup at home. The message to everyone is clear, we have to win the World Cup. So, for obvious reasons, the focus is not on T20s at the moment. There are a lot of discussions going on. But for a final decision, CAC and the selectors have to be involved. And it will take a little while,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Why do India need a fresh approach in T20? –
- Since the inception of IPL, India have not won the T20 WC trophy.
- With a lot of talent coming through IPL, the trophy has been a surprising absence.
- Currently, India have a large pool of players available in T20s.
- However, India’s orthodox approach has been the biggest deterrent.
- Instead of trusting new players and promoting domestic talents, India have stuck to tried-and-tested veterans.
- But with T20 World Cup 2022 disappointment, India want a new approach in coaching.
- Furthermore, with the amount of cricket increasing, Dravid has a lot on his plate at the moment.
