India Cricket Overhaul: India T20 Reboot: The BCCI has called on captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid for a special meeting in Mumbai. The BCCI bigwigs will meet the captain-coach duo besides Virat Kohli before departing for Bangladesh on December 1. Some of the outgoing selectors will also be present in Mumbai. While it is a T20 WC performance review, the main agenda of the meeting is to discuss the way forward. A discussion on split captaincy and split coaching will also be tabled. “There will be a meeting. I can’t tell you exactly when. We are supposed to meet Rohit and Rahul before they leave for Bangladesh. There are few things to discuss. There is no review as such. we need to plan for the next World Cup. Rohit and Rahul both know what changes we need. As for split captaincy and coach, once we meet with the coach and captain besides selectors, we will take a call,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Split captaincy: However, BCCI is in dilemma at the moment. Virat Kohli was removed as ODI and Test captain as they did not want split capitancy. But with Rohit Sharma ageing and a need to set plans for 2024 T20 WC have forced the board to rethink. Rohit Sharma will stay put as the ODI. A discussion on ODI and Test captaincy will only take place after 2023 WC.

However, InsideSport understands that BCCI is ready to take the bold step and appoint a new captain. With not many T20s scheduled in 2023, Hardik Pandya will take charge of the T20 team.

Split Captaincy: With more and more bilateral series, a need to look at alternatives is much-needed. BCCI could follow England’s footsteps in this regard. Although Dravid will stay on as the ODI coach, BCCI is mulling a decision to appoint a T20 coach. It’s not that Dravid hasn’t played T20s but like many others, he has been conservative in his approach.

Who all will attend the meeting:

  • Rohit Sharma
  • Rahul Dravid
  • Virat Kohli
  • BCCI President Roger Binny
  • Secretary Jay Shah
  • BCCI Treasurer Ashish Shelar
  • Chetan Sharma (Outgoing Chairman of selectors)

The BCCI wants to change that. India need a reinvention of T20 approach and that is where they need new ideas. Even though Gautam Gambhir and others have asked for an Indian coach, BCCI is open to ideas of a foreign coach. It will lessen the burden on Dravid, who has faced criticism for frequent breaks as well.

“We can’t afford to lose repeatedly. We will not take chances anymore. We are already in discussion with Rohit Sharma and he is comfortable with idea of the appointment of new captain for the T20 format. We will do the same with Rahul. He without doubt is an asset. But there is too much on his plate and we want to reduce his load. We will soon meet him,” confirmed the top BCCI official.
