In the India vs Pakistan bronze medal playoff at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2023, the former beat arch-rivals 3-3 (6-5) in a penalty shootout on Saturday. Arun Sahani (11’), Poovanna CB (42’), and Captain Uttam Singh (52’) scored for India, while on the other hand, Sufyan Khan (33’), Abdul Qayyum (50’), and Shahid Hannan (57’) got goals for Pakistan in regulation time.
The match lived up to the IND vs PAK hype, as the shootout went into sudden death, with Mohith HS saving India the blushes. Both the teams started the encounter well, with goals coming in at regular intervals. The first goal though, came when Sahani deflected a pass from Rohit into the net. The first half came to a solid end for India, with a few close chances coming their way.

Pakistan’s first goal came when Sufyan Khan netter a penalty corner. But soon after Poovanna got the lead for India, in a matter of three minutes. Then came a phase where the arch-rivals dominated the play, and scored two goals in seven minutes,
The India vs Pakistan match moved into the shootout with Arshad Liaqat, Hannan Shahid, Abdul Rehman, and Ahtisham Aslam scoring for the opposition. For India, Vishnukant Singh, Rajinder Singh, Angad Bir Singh, and Uttam Singh scored. In sudden death, Mohith held his nerve and shadowed Shahid Hannan well to get India the win.
In the same tournament, in another Ind vs Pak clash, the match had finished on a similar scoreline of 3-3, and ended in a draw then.
