India at Tokyo Paralympics Day 9: Shuttlers take centre stage, Prachi Yadav, Arvind Malik begin campaign – Follow LIVE Updates – India have already broken records at the Tokyo Paralympics, bagging their best ever tally of 10 medals at the quadrennial Games. However, the Indian contingent isn’t done just yet, and a host of athletes are yet to make to feature on the grandest of stages. The Indian badminton contingent will be in focus when action resumes on Day 9 of the Paralympics, with as many as five shuttlers in action. The likes of Arvind Malik, Aruna Tanwar and Parchi Yadav will make their first-ever appearance in their respective sports, while Akash & Rahul Jakhar will also look to hit their marks in the mixed team event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020..

Women’s Doubles SL3-SU5 – Parul Parmar, Palak Kohli vs Cheng Hefang, Ma Huihui @5:30 AM
The women’s doubles will be making its debut at the Paralympics, and Parul Parmar and Palak Kohli will be India’s first participants in the event. The duo are currently ranked sixth in the world in their category and hence qualified, despite missing out on the Spanish Open due to COVID-19 restrictions. Parul, 48, is multiple World Championships and Asian Para Games gold medallist and will aim to add a Paralympics medal to her tally. Palak, 19, meanwhile is a multiple BWF Para-Badminton medallist and will hope to make a mark in her maiden Olympics.
Men’s Singles SL4 – Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj vs Jan Niklas Pott @6:10 AM
The 38-year-old Suhas Yathiraj won the bronze medal at the Asian Para Games and has multiple medals at the BWF level. A district magistrate, Yathiraj will be aiming to clinch a Paralympics medal to his tally when he begins his campaign against Jan Niklas Pott.
Men’s Singles SL4 – Tarun Dhillon vs Siripong Teamarrom @6:50 AM
Dhillion is the world No.2 in his category and is India’s biggest hope from the para-badminton contingent. He won the men’s singles at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2013 and went on to repeat his golden performance in 2015 for his second world title. Two years later, he managed silver in men’s singles and doubles. Tarun at 27, will be aiming for a podium finish and starts off his campaign on Thursday.
Women’s Singles SL4 – Parul Parmar vs Cheng Hefang @8:50 AM
Veteran Parul Parmar perhaps has her last chance at clinching a Paralympics medal when she enters the court on Thursday in Tokyo. The 48-year-old won the gold medal in the last two Asian Para Games but will aim for a podium finish in Tokyo, and add to India’s already impressive medals tally so far.
Men’s Singles SS6 – Krishna Nagar vs Didin Taresoh @9:30 AM
A bronze medallist at the Asian Para Games, Krishna Nagar will begin his Tokyo Paralympics campaign on Thursday, when he faces Didin Taresoh. Nagar won multiple medals at the 2019 World Championships and will now aim to add a Paralympics honour to his name. The 22-year-old is one of the youngest in the Indian badminton contingent and will be hoping to gain a podium finish.
India at Tokyo Paralympics Day 9- Para Canoeing – Women’s VL2 – Prachi Yadav @6:10 AM
Prachi Yadav is the only Indian participant in the event at the Tokyo Paralympics and will aim to put in a strong show. The 26-year-old was a champion para-swimmer for India, but switched to para canoe at the behest of her coach, who realised she had a better chance of getting to the Paralympics 2020. Now having made the trip to Tokyo, Yadav will be aiming to make a mark and progress further.
India at Tokyo Paralympics Day 9 – Taekwondo – Women’s K44 -49kg – Aruna Tanwar @7:15 AM
Aruna Tanwar will be the first-ever Indian Taekwondo athlete to qualify for the Paralympics. A serial winner, Tanwar won the bronze medal at the 5th Asian Para Open Taekwondo Championships and the 8th World Para-Taekwondo Championships and will be hoping to make a mark on her games debut.
India at Tokyo Paralympics Day 9- Shooting – Mixed P3 – 25 m pistol SH1 – Akash & Rahul Jakhar @5:15 AM
Rahul Jakhar clinched gold with a score of 240.1 at the Para World Cup in Croatia. He also participated in the 2018 Asian Para Games P4 mixed 50m free pistol (SH1 event). Akash Jakhar meanwhile set the world record in qualification, and the duo will aim to make it to the podium in Tokyo Paralympics 2020.
India at Tokyo Paralympics Day 9- Athletics – Men’s Shot Put F35 – Arvind Malik @
Arvind Malik will be aiming for a podium finish when he takes the stage for the Men’s Shot Put F35 Finals. Arvind attained the Minimum Qualification Standard with a distance of 14.05m in men’s shot put final F35/36 to book a place in the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. He finished fifth in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix.
