IND ZIM ODI SERIES – KL Rahul, Deepak Chahar fitness: The selectors of the Indian cricket team have asked the coach for the Zimbabwe tour, VVS Laxman, to keep a close tab on the fitness of Rahul Chahal and Deepak Chahar. The reason is simple. Both the players are making a comeback from an injury layoff. The National selectors wants to know if they are 100 percent match-fit with the Asia Cup 2022 and T20 World Cup scheduled in the next few months: Follow IND vs ZIM 1ST ODI LIVE & Asia Cup 2022 LIVE Updates with InsideSport.IN

KL Rahul, Deepak Chahar fitness: The request from the selector makes sense with the players having been absent from the competitive international scene for quite a long time. Rahul is returning back to the Indian team from sports hernia surgery and also contracted Covid recently. Deepak Chahar had a back injury.

Chahar played his last game in February and missed the entire IPL campaign as well. As for Rahul, his last game was in the IPL late May.

Why Rahul and Chahar fitness is important

  • Both the players are making a comeback after a long time
  • They were absent from the Indian team due to injuries. Rahul (sports hernia surgery). Deepak Chahar (back)
  • Chahar has not played since February while Rahul since May
  • With the T20 World Cup in October, they need to prove their match fitness too
  • Question marks over Jasprit Bumrah has led the management to look into Deepak Chahar
  • There is competition at the top of the order for KL Rahul

Hence, the India vs Zimbabwe series comes at the right time for the management. Playing against the minnows will give them enough game time. More importantly, it will give the Indian team a good time to assess their overall fitness in the three-match ODI series.

It has gained further importance recently, especially in the case of Chahar. With question marks over availability of two key pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, Chahar can throw his hat in the ring with a good show in Zimbabwe.

As for Rahul, the case is a bit different. He is expected to walk into the Indian team as an opener in the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. However, he is aware of the competition at the top. The man from Karnataka will need to be at his best, both in terms of fitness as well as his bat.
