IND vs ZIM LIVE: Dropped from Asia Cup squad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson head to Zimbabwe with a point to prove- Can the duo come back to India’s T20 WC plans?
Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson agonisingly missed out on India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2022 as the likes of Kl Rahul and Virat Kohli returned to the team. Their comebacks meant that there was only a solitary spot vacant in the side which was taken up by Deepak Hooda, meaning Kishan and Samson were both omitted entirely.
The wicket-keeping duo are currently out of favour, falling down the pecking order Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik are preferred ahead of them. While the duo are yet to set the stage on fire, the team management has continued to back the duo and selected them for the Asia Cup squad.
Kishan is India’s second highest ranked T20I batter behind Suryakumar Yadav and will feel hard done by having seen chances slip away in recent times. Having played all seven T20Is against South Africa and Ireland, Kishan was relegated to the bench in the games against England and West Indies. India first opted to open with Rishabh Pant and then Suryakumar Yadav as IPL 2022’s most expensive signing warmed the bench. He did get his chance in the final game of the series in what was an inconsequential fixture.

Kishan was also ignored for the 3 ODIs against the West Indies with Shubman Gill playing at the top of the order with Shikhar Dhawan. With Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav both not part of the Zimbabwe tour, Kishan will aim to nail down his place in the team.
Samson will also aspire to do the same having been a hit and miss since his return to the side. The Kerala-born superstar did get runs under his belt against Ireland and West Indies but has often shot himself in the foot, failing to make the best out of his abilities. The right-hander’s ability to score quick runs and his versatility makes him one of the more senior players on the Zimbabwe tour. Samson did make his debut against the same opposition seven years ago, and will hope that he can turn his international career around on his return to Harare.
